Synpower-2011 Altima

Hey guys, oil change time is approaching for our Altima. It's has the 2.5L engine and requires 5w30. Draining out PP with a K&N oil filter. I noticed synpower was on sale at Walmart.

Has anyone run Valvoline Synpower in a Nissan 2.5? How was it? Quiet? Is it a good enough oil to handle 6-7k?

The oil itself will handle that OCI as long as its not all short trips. There was a recent UOA on a Honda after 9K miles and wear metals were still below average. Cant comment on how quiet it was. It will probably be louder than PP.

Just remember no two engines are absolutely identical SO who knows whether it will be noisier or not? Use SYNpower or SYNtec or SYNthoil or "SYNoco" as long as it meets your manufacturer's specifications. If it meets specs use WHATEVER YOU like. Don't depend on opinions.

Synpower will do just fine in that application. I have run it in the 3.3L Nissan VG33E, but not a 2.x application. In my SC300 with 200K on it, the Synpower was a bit noisy, and the PP was quiet. Albeit the difference wasn't that much, and I've heard the exact opposite from people on this forum. Each car is different. I kinda *shrug* the noise factor anyway in a car with 200K on it... I'll be using Synpower in it again next change.

Yeah, we had a 2010, 5w30 is what it spec's. My uncles 2013 Altima 2.5s spec's 0w20-5w30 go figure

To me, that engine had a little tick using anything except Pennzoil Ultra 5w30. The "worst" was Amsoil 5w30. Absolute best I have to say was Castrol Edge SPT 5w40 no doubt the quietest oil I used. Do I think it mattered in wear difference, I doubt it. I did a used oil analysis with Mobil 1 0w30 SM and it looked like a VOA after 5k. A fantastic engine no doubt.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I will have to just give it a try to form my own opinion. The PP has been pretty smooth in the Altima, so overall I've been pleased with it.

I'm one of those weirdos that's likes to change things all the time..I don't like using the same product over and over. Drives my wife nuts.

So I'll give the Synpower a try see how I feel about it.

Chubbs, did you ever have that 1-2 second start up clatter in your previous Altima? Every now and then I get it in the Altima, although I don't drive it every day as it is my wife's dd. Its a common issue, and apparently it's not an oil/filter issue. We'll see..

The '13 Model 2.5 engine has engine upgrades and specs 0w20, more likely for the push for better mpg as well as upgrades to its CVT.

Don't quote me on this but PP may be factory fill on the new 2.5 Altima. I say that because my dad's '13 had its oil changed at the dealer and they used 0w20 PP.

Dealer uses any oil brand they wants, mostly they deal with local distributor(s) and whichever costs less is what they use.

One local Honda dealer doesn't have any Honda oil to sell to DIYer's and bulk oil they have is Mobil, another Honda dealer uses Valvoline.

I used many brands and switching between syn and dino all the time in my LS400, never felt any difference from 1 brand to another, also could not feel the difference between syn and dino. The only time I could feel the difference was using 5W20 instead of 5W30, the thinner oil made engine run quieter and rev much easier.
