I am just curious if GM/Penzoil Synchromesh would be ok to use in a 6MT gear box on a 06 Audi A4. Have read lots of good things about it, and saw a bottle at the local Napa.

From some of the research I have done the factory fill has a VIS @100C of 14.2 and the Penz Synchromesh has a 9.6. So I am going to assume not. I live in Alaska, and even with factory fill (40k miles on it right now) it is pretty difficult to shift in the morning.

I actually wasn't that impressed with the Penzoil Synchromesh in cold weather, didn't seem much better than the OEM on a 2001 Accord. Maybe since there is such a large visc difference you would see a benefit, but in my experience there really was none. It was a good fluid with good shiftability, but still really hard to get into first if rolling at all around 10 or below.

Perhaps someone here could point you in the direction of a redline or amsoil product that would help.

Best of luck.

Alaska weather is the saving grace for using a thinner oil.
I like PS, but consider an on line order of Amsoil or Redline.
Full synthetic and you can get a thicker version.

Yeah I just found a dealer up here that has redline MT90 and MTL. Going to pick some up today. I have heard of many people mixing the two. My gearbox takes 3.7 quarts, any suggestion on the mix?

I put the Amsoil Syncromesh in my truck's manual transmission and I like it a lot. I can tell a decrease in noise on top of the smoother entry and exit of gears.

Tusin,

You might want to check on an Audi forum to see what's popular.

Maybe three qts of MTL and then top off with MT90 - to hopefully give you decent cold shifting.

Thank you for all the help everyone. I ended up going the other way around (kind of). Did 2 quarts of of MT-90 and 1.5 of MTL. It does get warm in the summer time (well mid 70's, sometimes 80's).

Please give us a report on the Redline.

What is the typical night time temp (in F) this time of year in Anchorage?

Tusin - You did just fine. Giver her several hundred miles to let the new fluid and additives get in the pores of the metal. Things should get better and better.

Nighttime temps up here vary way to much. But in the winter it can be from -20 to +20. Past few winters have been very odd, and this one takes the cake. February is generally our coldest month, but it has been in the upper 30's during the day, with a overnight low of about +20.

Summer lows are generally in the mid to upper 50's with highs in the 70's (a few 80 days are not unheard of). A little OT, but if you have never experienced an Alaskan summer, try to make a trip. Doesn't get dark till about midnight/1am.

Already shifting has improved. I am really enjoying it. And you are right, it has started to get better and better. BUT with that being said. I have decided to get my transmission looked at before my warranty is up (probably should have done it to begin with). 3rd gear grinding is a common issue (weak syncro). I guess there is an updated part.

I wouldn't touch the Syncromesh for the A4. It's way too thin. I'm running it in the Miata and like it, but the A4 transmission is too expensive to run an experiment on.

lol yup, the experiment never happened:) I did buy a bottle because it was dirt cheap and wanted to check it out. But compared to OEM and Redline MT90, it was like water.

Actually there is a guy on Passatworld running it. I was considering it for the A4, but thought better and went with the MTL again.
