Switching to Synthetic, Yay or Nay?

Pablo that is because after 23 years of working repairing trucks, cars, tractors ,forklifts, all sorts of gas and diesel engines , for a living I can ask why?what is the advantage as I do not sell syn. oil so I can be objective. There are some advantages of syn oil Extreme cold starting and high mile oil drains which most syn users do not take advantage of. I had a 92 v6 cyl. Toyota run on yearly oil changes using Amsoil A friend was a dealer, Redline oil and M1 .At 85,000 miles I did an A/RX cleaning "with the valve covers removes the engine looked brand new" the filter had a black powder coating and my gas mileage returned to almost 21 mpg like when it was new. So much for clean piston rings. I am not an internet expert .I made a living repairing vehicles I know how an engine is lubed.

That is cause I know how an engine lubes .23 years experience . Not an internet expert .I also do not sell Amsoil so there no marketing in my posts.

If you have 23 years of experience you should know the benefits of synthetics by now. Selling Amsoil or any other brand of oil has no baring on the facts regarding synthetic oils.

Synthetic is a superior product. Quicker flo, better hi temp performance, less likely to sludge. So what's not to like re synthetic?

If this is another one of those "Is Synthetic Better" threads - then Yes it is. Besides extreme temp flow rate improvements, it keeps engines slightly cleaner and in most cases, allows longer drains.

Having said that,I can see that lots of guys have acceptable used oil analysis running 4-5k on dino and 5-7 on syns. Quite an education. I'm running "blind" (no used oil analysis yet) 6-7k 1yr oci's on Mobil 1 Extended Performance and now feel safe doing so.

Ah yes...there is no sin in switching to syn...

I switched the wifes car at 125k...no leaks. Better MPG by 1.5 using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 that I got for under $3 at the AAP Bogo. I extended the drain by 1000 miles as well in hers and by 2000 miles in my GMC. In the long run it is less work and less expensive. Which is my goal.

Scott,

Check with your local Chrysler dealership first. The transmission might already be a synthetic. In my 01' Dodge Durango I've heard the newer class 4 transmission fluids are suppose to be synthetic.

The oil I use is Mobil 1 and it's been my favorite since they came out with it. They also make a universal synthetic fluid too.

Honda's shift best with the Honda ATF. P. S. Meant to say 5-7 on blends above.

The benefits of synthetics in most cases are never realized, or needed that is the point of my statements. Most people change their syn fills at too low of a mileage not taking the main benefit of the oil. Lookinf at the used oil analysis there isn't any noticable difference in the wear metals. Therer is no magic is syn oils .I have and do use syn oils in certain applications . But there is little advantage in using syn oils with todays oils in most applications.

I use it "just in case". Maybe a slight low/high temp advantage, plus less deposits.... For the relatively little difference in price, I buy myself a little more piece of mind....Which to me you can't put a price on...

other than the fact that syns can really take a temperature beating like if your motor over heats or is over worked (hard offroading, hard racing and etc).. i change my syn at 5-6k miles period. ALSO they have great cold flowing properties making it ideal in winters

How cold is winter ,how hot does your oil get when hard off roading /racing . Define overheating ? If as in a coolant leak the oil is seperated from most heat by the water jackets in the cyl heads .The valve seats will fall out or the head gasket will give before the oil overheats.

Further,I picked up .5 to 1 mpg when I went from conventional to Mobil 1 in my Honda. The syn can pay for itself. Everyone should do the math with the miles they drive each year.

Wont a good GRP III, with appropriate OCIs, also keep your rings clean? I am not being argumentative now. I really want to hear what you have to say about this.
