Switching to synthetic oil....

Hey all, I've done some searching to no avail...

I'm curious about switching to synthetic oil in my Tacoma... It's a high milager with 360k on it... Truck runs really well, has been maintained meticulously from day one (been in the family since new with all records!!).

Just looking for some feedback, or even links to other posts!

with 360K on the clock i'd keep doing what you have been and call it good.

With winter on it's way I would consider one of the following Mobil 1 0W40, XD3 0W30,0W40. My Dad's does not have as many miles as yours yet but it is like new in almost every way mechanicly. He has run Mobil 1 15W50 inthe warm months and Mobil 1 10W30 in the winter. In Canada though I wouldnot run anything more then a 5W in the winter just in case an artic storm comes through!The first oil change do not go much past 7500 miles as the oil will be doing some cleaning. If you want you can run an engine flush for 15 minutes then you can go right to any oil change interval you want as long as the oil can handle it.

Synthetic is not magic on a std pass car or truck - Dino is! Plus synthetic is just dino anyways, typically.

The logic behind not changing is you are presently in a very, very small club w/360,000 miles and nothing you do can improve on your current situation. I'll give you a quote from a famous general... " The only enemy of a good plan is the pursuit of the perfect plan."

They do not want you to RISK causing the "Appearance/Surfacing" of engine oil leaks.

Saeros, the thing is most high quality synthetic have a stronger additive package than conventional oils, and they will clean your engine WAY too good, causing the some of the carbon buildup to come off from the inner engine walls which is actually preventing leaks...

so that is why...if you still wanna use a Synthetic and not risk leakages than in my opinion you must only use a High Mileage synthetic oil such as

Here is the hard part, you will have to find a local auto parts store who can order you a case of these products or u will have to contact the local distributor of these respective brands and buy directly off them.....because i have never seen these products over the counter...at least not in Canada!

Well the helpful part is that I work for a MAJOR auto parts chain, so typically having access to these parts is no issue.

And to clarify, it's 360,000kms not miles

Thats about 200K, I didnt do the math. I would use the analogy, go home with the girl that you brought to the dance. Not a flashy floosy.

I switched my 21 year old Honda Accord from conventional to Amsoil ASL at 214,000 miles, no leaks yet.

You should see an advantage in cold weather by switching to a quality synthetic. An engine flush will speed up the cleaning process that you will get from synthetics. Make sure you research the oil change interval as you should be changing your oil less often with a quality synthetic. I'd recommend AMSOIL's line of premium oils. There are a few sponsors on here you could buy from.

still a high mileage, anything over 160K Km is considered high mileage car...
