Switch from M1 5w-30 to thicker oil after 150,000

Anyone think it would be beneficial to switch from M1 5w30 to maybe M1 10w30 or M1 10w-40 as the engine ages?
 
For what it's worth. I have been using 5W20 in a 98 F150 with 160,000 miles in the winter. The original spec. was 5W30 which I use in the summer. No issues.

I agree with the others, unless you have a consumption issue or some other problem it isn't necessary.

When you consider that M1 5w30 has a 40C cSt of 64.8, 100C cSt of 11.3. and the M1 10w30 has a 40C cSt of 62 and a 100C cSt of 10, there is no real advantage of going to the 10w30 as you would actually be going to a thinner oi. The HTHS of the 5W is 3.09 and the HTHS of the 10W is 3.14, a difference of only .05, virtually/probably identical base oil. Will the 5w30 shear more? Yes, it will, but an extensive research on just the UOA'S on Bitog, going back to 1 July, 2008 and going to 31 Dec, 2008, shows it takes an average of 5000 miles for the 5w30 to shear to the equal of the 10w30

On the other hand, the 10w30 HM has a 100C cSt of 11.79, 40C cSt of 78.2, and HTHS of 3.66, it is a much heavier base oil, has 1000 zddp, extra detergent/dispersant/antioxidant/boron/moly.
 
I used M1 5w30 in my 1998 Camry V6 from the first oil change to when I just sold it in Jan 2009. Having used a high quality sythetic the entire life of the car, and becasue the engine idled and accelerated like it did when brand new, there was no reason to use a High Mileage Oil, or one with higher viscosity.

If I had not used a full synthetic the entire life of the car, there might be some problems that are typical of older cars that a High Mileage Oil (or one with higher viscostity like 10w30) would possibly help with.
 
Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to stick with the M1 on the Nissan since it is not consuming oil and try the M1 HM on the Dodge since it uses about a quart every 4-5K miles. Thanks everyone!

My brother switched his engine (Toyota 3.1 V6) to HM 10w30. 196k miles. Cured a slow seal leak and oil burning issue.

I don't know squat about the Nissan, but the 2.7 should never be given thicker oil. For one thing, it uses oil pressure to actuate the cam guide tensioners and a thicker oil might adversely affect that process. For another, some versions of it are prone to cooking/sludging, and a thin full-synthetic is one of the best defenses against that.

I do all of the "light" maintenance work on my Priest's car. When he came to our parish in July of 2007, his car had 63,000 miles. It has never had synthetic and was changed at a quick lube place every 5000 miles. I switched it over to M1 10w30 HM at 63,000. I changed the filter at 1500 miles into the OCI and it was "heavy." When I was getting ready for the 87,000 OCI, I was told that I would have the Valvoline Synthetic 10w30 and Purolators free for every OCI, so that went in at 87,000.

The car runs better now than it did at 63,000, is smoother, much better throttle response, starts easier, but I can't verify MPG. He has, to say the least, a "unique" way of measuring gas mileage.

Of course, got it(10w30) in my 260,000 mile '99 Z71 5.7 and it loves the stuff,great oil pressure no usage at all in 6,000 miles now,have also used 0w30 in there same thing no usage.
