What's the best way to treat rust that has devloped near the rocker panels, and wheel weels (after some paint chips that I didn't notice). Is it a matter of cleaning, priming and using the same colour paint to cover, or is it more complicated (or easier) than that? Until then, what's the best way to protect the area until the "touch-up" paint job? I've heard of motor oil, WD40, etc. after washing it, just to "coat and protect" it.

Sand it carefully to remove the rust. I would then coat it with the touch up paint. This would only be for a minor chip. Any major problem would need to be fixed by a professional.

Cleaning ALL the visible oxidation out, checking the growth of microlevel rust, inhibiting the metal and properly covering the metal are the basic steps.

Would it work if I could find the exact same colour in a Tremclad rust paint? The areas aren't very visible, but are there none the less. Didn't mention that the spots are behind my mudflaps as well as those in the wheelwells. They're about 1"x1", a few in each area. It's a 1999 Silverado, rest of the vehicle is mint. Kind of disappointed about the rust, actually. I've read that Tremclad or any other rust paint bonds to rust, seals it and displaces moisture.
