Supertech Syn right up there with Royal Purple

Judging on the NOACK and VI numbers, I don't think that RP has any PAO in the API line of oils. They don't appear (on paper) to be any different than the other OTS Grp III syn oils.

With that said and price being equal, I'd always pick Mobil 1 5w30 over RP 5w30 based on what I see in the VOAs. Just my preference, I'm not saying that RP is a bad oil. I wouldn't know it's quality since I've never used it.

i used RP SN and it performed well for me. the only complaint i have with RP is that the oil is super dark after 100 miles and the dye goes away. I prefer my oils a beautiful Amber color. the purple is very cool pouring it in, but i prefer it to not look like it has 4k miles on it after a trip around the block. however, I know color is irrelevant to oil performance.

the royal purple did excellent for 7k miles in my previous hemi ram.

I've done alot of oil experimenting,and Syntec/GTX is the smoothest running,so I plan to keep using these.

Royal Purple is a big waste of $. Their industrial lubes are good and so are some of the specific racing oils they make. Otherwise, there isn't much to really like.

Keep in mind the more clear the oil, the less clean it is keeping your engine.

RP is overhyped and overpriced. Four years ago BP caught them with their pants down and proved that their Castrol products performed just as well as Royal Purple's:

I hear Royal Purple has changed ownership and judging from PQIA's latest test, it seems that they have slipped even more. I would choice Mobil and Pennzoil without hesitation over RP. Plus both are a lot cheaper with Walmart's everyday prices.

That's the scary part. When original companies sell out,99.9% of the time the *formulas" get cheapened out. BUT,I'm not saying this about RP,I'm just making a generalization.

Sorry, it's not a BAD oil. I just don't see what it has over any other oil.

They do offer specific racing oils in grades you can't get with the other brands other than Redline.

I think that's their biggest advantage, along with a few other fluids like driveline stuff and break in oils. They also have historically catered to those people with older vehicles.

Up here, the RP API stuff is found on a few shelves. And its pricing isn't out of line with the other synthetics, at least those offered at regular prices. I have yet to see RP significantly rolled back. In any event, I can get RP a tad cheaper than M1 or PP at one of my suppliers. Of course, if there's a rollback, that price advantage gets wiped.

Yeah, it's $21 up here. I went down south to my in-laws', and my FIL showed me the wal-mart he shops at in council bluffs, and the supertech syn was $17. I told him, "no wonder you weren't listening to me about Quaker State Synthetic - this is literally $5 cheaper!"

yes, im aware. this is why i like and oil that is amber in color because i can tell as it gets darker. RP starts off dark purple and then changes to dark brown as soon as the engine is ran. its hard to watch the oil change color when it starts off very dark.

i like my oil to start off amber and watch it progressively darken.

Been to the Council Bluffs store many times. Worked there in high school actually. Moved over here to Omaha a couple of years ago to be closer to work. Small world. Wondered if anyone on here had even heard of Council Bluffs

Well of course people have. Council Bluffs is the closest place in west central/south west iowa for a bass pro shops! Even though it is kinda becoming more of a dirty place.

Went to Bass Pro too! Gigantic store that goes on for days. No 9mm dyes unfortunately. Did find some interesting items on the main floor though! We drive straight through Council Bluffs every time we visit Iowa, it's on the way down to her parents'.
