A Positive Displacement Pumps is a "constant flow machine"
A Positive Displacement Pump must never operate against closed valves on the discharge side of the pump - it has no shut-off head like Centrifugal Pumps. A Positive Displacement Pump operating against closed discharge valves continues to produce flow until the pressure in the discharge line is increased until the line bursts or the pump is severely damaged - or both.

A relief or safety valve on the discharge side of the Positive Displacement Pump is absolute necessary. The relief valve can be internal or external the pump. An internal valve should in general only be used as a safety precaution. An external relief valve installed in the discharge line with a return line back to the suction line or supply tank is highly recommended.

The vast majority of oil pumps have some kind of relief valve mounted in or on them, or in the block, which limits the pressure that can go to the filter. Jim Allen's tests proved that unless one runs high RPM, with thick oil, on cold starts in winter, bypass events are few & far between. Only filters that seem to have a big problem with bypass are the Purolators, the media is weak enough & the pleat spacing is too wide (sometimes) that the media is weaker than the bypass setting. Wix made filters don't have this problem, YET...
 
Debri point of entry potentiality. This is why i was using long filter with a screen in the bypass. I l just need to make sure to change oil in summer with the new st6607.The puroator boss is also an awsome filter. If i ignore my view and the price? The boss is a better oil filter

Depends on the orientation of the filter. I would never use a base end bypass valve on my Tacoma that has it mounted vertically with base down.

If the filter is horizontal it doesn't really matter were the bypass valve is located. The base end bypass is most useful on filters that have the base up.

I see nothing about the Purolator Boss that says it's better than the Ultra. Purolator won't even say what the real efficiency is of their new line of oil filters.
 
On the boss box it says 99%. I like how the glue seem to join the metal and media but you are right it does not mean anything. But too many attention to detail. I beleive the boss filter is good

What options are there that have the bypass valve at the thread end? I know the MC FL820S does. What else?

Quite a few Motorcrafts have the bypass on the base end. Also, quite a few WIX/NAPA Gold filters do.

Of course, any filter with a combo ADBV/bypass valve will be on the base end.

99% of what at what? This is just a marketing statement without an ISO specification to back it up and this is the rub with Purolator these days (at least one of them).

It must be brutal to see this marketing hype take over for any real manufacturing folks left there from the old Purolator days. I can just imagine the Powerpoint presentations where "Dirt Removal Power" is being presented along with how they are going to hype it on Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat! Some poor guy raises his hand and asks what does it mean, and is immediately demoted on the org chart.
