Supertech ST16 cut open 3100 miles

Got a Supertech ST16 that ran about 4 months and 3100 miles and drove home about 10 miles with no coolant in it (one of the heater hose Y's broke) somehow the engine survived that catastrophic overheating I was told the engine sounded like rocks in a blender it was pinging so bad. Filter looks like it did fine. Shell Rotella T4 15W40 oil was used. Same oil and filter went back in this heap. 2010 Chrysler T&C 3.3 V6

That filter is pitch black. I think the oil got a bit warm.

A photo of that filter in bright sunshine might look different. 15 w 40 oil in a 3.3 Chrysler is and unusual choice but may have been the right choice in this situation.

It's still trucking along, 175K on it now still running good. It's been through the ringer lol.

These 07+ 3.3 and 3.8 V6's suck down the 5W20 and 5W30 like it's no tomorrow. This engine had a hard life, and I have been giving him oil changes since he helps me out with a lot of work on my house, it seems to like the 15W40 and I have a lot of it on hand. I run 0W40 in my van and it loves it, barely uses any oil. It looked black in the sunlight as well.

It's been almost 4 months since the overheat and it gets driven every day, it happened right after this last oil change. We could never figure out where it kept losing coolant, the plastic Y in the heater hose circuit above the exhaust crossover would start leaking when hot but we never caught it. His wife was the one that drove it home detonating and rattling, he went to help her and she came flying down the hill towards home he said he heard it fly past him incredibly loud making all kinds of racket. I guess those engines are pretty tough, hasn't lost a drop of coolant since it was fixed. Glad it's not mine lol.

Oh yeah, it's not usually this dark even with more mileage on the oil than this, it definitely got very hot. The filter seal was even distorted/flattened out from heat.

Where the seal was contacting the engine, it had deformed and flared out the seal like it was a flange seal lol.
