You don't think the SF/SG "lawn mower oil" has any additives/detergents? If that is the case, you would be highly mistaken.

You think that lawn mowers should run on additive free (SA) non-detergent motor oils? Once again, you would be highly mistaken. Open up an engine manual. ANY engine manual from the past 60 years, and ALL of them will tell you to use a detergent motor oil.Briggs, Tecumseh, Kawasaki, Kohler, all of them require a detergent motor oil.

You would think a person with 1000 post on this website would figure this out by now.

Rotella has one of the best formulations you could possibly have for a lawnmower engine and is actually ideal for air cooled 4 stroke engines.

Well, I use Rotella SAE 30 in the 11 year old push mower at parents rental properties and my own 14 year old push mower and change the oil every May. No problems at all

Lawnmowers don't need any special additive oils. They will rust out usually or die of other neglect or abuse first. I have never seen a lawnmower spin a bearing. I have even seen people run them with no oil, lock them up, free them up and run again.

+1 on using 15w40 in OPE and the price for a gallon of any store brand is cheap. Can't speak on the utility of reusing car/truck oil, but why?

The mower isn't going to know any difference.

I'm sure somewhere out there that there's a nextgen bottle that was once oil in my truck and then mower, it's still going strong?

Burning off waste oil, even if it's good and cheap, there are many better choices out there for it.

My dad probably still has used truck-then mower oil he uses for living the slide shed doors at the house

In my countyin florida, if you recycle oil at Walmart, it's used for heating

AAP/Autozone used to send it to Valvoline, and I'm pretty sure they still do (maybe Valvoline conventional is partially recycled?
If you send it to the landfill, it's pumped into giant tractors and diesel compactors and burned off.

Is this the same person who rented a car that was low on oil and he added his used oil to it?

But when has 'don't need' ever come into play here? Many readers of this forum are not ones to avoid doing something simply because it isn't 'needed'. Not many vehicles actually need Synthetic oil, really, but a lot of people sure use it. There's a lot of feel-good, because-I-want-to practices on this site and I can understand that. I paid $4 or so for the quart of Rotella 15w40 that I put in my push mower. It will probably last me the year, though it could last two if I just changed the oil once per season (32oz = 2 changes) but I think I'll change it again mid-season because I can. Because really, what is a $4/year investment on a $200 piece of lawn equipment. My spending for gasoline for it will easily eclipse that.

I used to change my oil in my truck per season, and whatever I dumped went into the lawnmower for that season, as did the used filter.

That mower is now 11 years old, and the engine still hums, powers still there, the cutting deck rotted away, but it still hauls a 6 ft tractor trailer full of limerock when the road washes away.

For the price of a quart, why would you do this??? Boggles my mind..

Uhm.. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?
I'm not a tree hugging advocate, yet pre military, in high school, I was a struggling teenager trying to make life work, at 16, I was scrapping metal for pennies to pay for my truck payments (211$ a month, former Dealer truck)
At that time, I wasn't going to let my parents pay for my vehicle. Anyway, our riding lawnmower had broken, I found another and got it working. I wasn't going to "ask" my parents for $$ to do maintenance.

Fast forward to the army, EPA is king on a military post. Countless times I was made to get into a recycling bin because somebody put cardboard in a plastic bin.

That last little bit of oil, it goes a long way over time.
Say your mower takes 1 qt, you just drained 4 qts, you have 4 changes on the mower now, or one change for four mowers?
That and cost of filter (3-10$) can add up.

if it works, there should be no issue.

Now, living in texas still with a non military roomie, he has battery powered mowers, Don't have that issue.
