I've been using Castrol GTX HM, among other oils, in my old '86 B2000 for about a year now. But the other day I was in Wal-Mart and saw a 5 qt jug of their Supertech High Mileage Synthetic 10w-40 for less than $15. The Castrol GTX HM 10w-40 is about $2 more more jug.

So here's my question for you gurus. The Castrol High Mileage is a blend but the Supertech High Mileage is a Full Syntheticthentic. Other than price, which is not significantly lower, would a Full Synthetic HM benefit my old truck? She leaks a little but burns nothing with 157K on her.

Just curious about opinions....not really worried about this old truck either way. Honestly, she seems fine with whatever I put in her. Just thought I would open up a friendly debate.

BTW, from researching around here...many folks seem like Super Tech oil.
 
My dad loves the SuperTech Synthetic. It's not a bad oil and it is at the minimum as good or better than the GTX but for a little less money.

Couldn't find their test on the synthetic but even the regular Supertech is right on par with other conventional oil like GTX, Mobil etc.

The Supertech High Mileage is NOT a full synthetic. It may be a syn blend (most HMs are) but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else knows for sure.
 
Supertech is good oil

Castrol isnt as good as oil as people think. its great oil but the hype and popularity is more because of how much they market for it compared to alot of other brands.

average person may not know what amsoil is, but most people here will bow down to it.

Perhaps I misread it. Maybe it is a blend.

While ST tested fine, you never know when Walmart will change suppliers for the next cheapest bidder. I'd rather not risk them choosing a "shady" supplier, because of that I stick with the majors.
 
Supertech High Mileage is not a synthetic or a blend. the majority of it is sourced from warren distribution, and warren, if contacted will tell you that it is a conventional. they will also email a data sheet. it is pretty much mag1 with a seal conditioner.
if you are concerned about consistancy of supplier, it can also be purchased as peak hm at pep boys.

Your right about the Mazdarati taking just about anything with "oil" and "API" labeled on the jug. My '86 burns and leaks. I'm in the process of a "cleaning" OCI with some G-Oil, 5W30 and a cheap STP oil filter (Autozone $9.99 Mobil Super deal from a year ago). I plan on running this about 1500 miles before exchanging with another "cleaning" OCI before switching to some Valvoline NexGen MaxLife 10W40 with a NAPA Gold or Purolator Pure1. My Mazda is rough around the edges but it is paid and starts when I sit in it. All in all, I really have enjoyed the truck. By far, my best investment in the truck was the Weber carb. Castrol GTX or Supertech High Mileage, this decision for me would become price dependent.

I believe it's been determined that the supplier is now Citgo, not WPP. The WMs in my area seem to still have some stock left of the WPP bottles, but the Citgo bottles are slowly but surely taking over. Politics aside, Citgo oil is a good quality product, so I would still use it with confidence.

I do feel the same way there.
 
Im sure supertech is a fine oil. But id rather spend a couple bucks more and get an oil from a blender I trust rather than warren of what ever it is this week.

where i am it is still in warren. has not changed in a long time. even when conventional supertech went to xom, hm and synthetic remained warren products. everything supertech in my walmart is currently a warren product. if it says wne or wpp on the bottom of the bottle, it is warren distribution. if it says lee, it is citgo.
 
Do they still make super tech? Is it still cheap? I remember seeing many repair shops buying it up years back.. we did that years ago with mobil when it was cheap we bought cases and cases but now we get the drums delivered
 
I don't use it but the guy that parks next to me does. 04 dodge Intrepid with some serious external leaks. He was using Maxlife. Very minimal dripping. He switched to ST HM, and now hes swapping cardboard under the car every week. Its so bad its smoking. Car stinks. I asked him why he changed oil brands. His answer was because he was consuming some would rather use the cheap stuff. I shook my head and walked away.

Sure they still make it, but it's not the deal it once was. You can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil or Havoline for only a buck and change more than the ST. Better deal for the money IMO.
