SuperTech High Mileage is Energy Conserving

I searched for this, but didn't find anything. Anyone notice that the Super Tech High Mileage oils have the Energy Conserving label on the bottle? They're the only High Mileage oil I've seen that also has the EC label. I was going to buy Valvoline MaxLife for my Dodge for the next OC, but now I'm thinking the Super Tech High Mileage.

Thoughts?
 
The Valvoline MaxLife has a more heavy duty base oil. It has a better HTHS than the ST. In fact, the synthetic Max Life 10w30 actually meets ACEA A3 specifications. The heavy duty base oil and the higher HTHS is why it does not meet ILSAC GF-4 mileage but does meet GF-4 emission specs.

Because of the better base oil and the better add pack, especially the FM and anti wear pack, I personally believe the Max Life is a MUCH better oil.
 
Normally High Mileage oils are blended a little thicker in their grade, so they can't meet the fuel economy test for GF-4. A little thicker oil to help reduce oil consumption may be desirable in some cases where an older vehicle is consuming some oil. If the Super Tech High Mileage is Energy Conserving, then it will be blended a little thinner in the viscosity range than some other High Mileage oils that are not EC.
 
The High Mileage oils have a higher ZDDP ratio and protect against wear longer & better...Energy-conserving oils would be fine if they allowed a tad more "good stuff" in them, but instead, they took out most of the "good stuff" and added a squirt of friction modifier...I say all oils should have both, and a ZDDP concentration somewhere between rotella & the avg EC dino...u can thank the people who pretend they care about the environment but always have a hidden agenda.

Where are you getting all this base oil and add pack info, might I ask?

btw- Super Tech High Mileage Synthetic carries A3, just like MaxLife Synthetic. I've actually used Super Tech High Mileage and it worked quite nicely. They marked it $8/5q for a while.
 
High Mileage oils (I used most of them over the years) did a great job in practically eliminating my start-up smoke. Wally Super Tech High Mileage performed as well as MaxLife.
 
My local Wal-Marts don't offer SuperTech High Mileage in 5w30 in a 5 quart jug. Am I the only one?

The cost to buy 5 individual quart bottles of Super Tech High Mileage pushes the price up to within a buck and a half of a MaxLife 5 quart jug.

So, I just grab the MaxLife.

I got it from the Valvoline web site. I noticed that the Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 met ACEA A3 and ILSAC GF-4 catalyst protection but did not meet GF-4 mileage. I looked at the PI sheet for Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 and saw that the ZDDP was at GF-4 levels and they had added a dose of 280 ppm MOLY. I kept searching their site and in some FAQ or Q$A it said they used a heavier base oil in the MaxLife than in the Synpower and that it was highly friction modified. They also spoke of other HM benefits of the add pack.

It's available in 5 quart jugs here for $12.50, which is $4.00 less than the Maxlife.

That's about the situation at my Walmart as well.

For the few dollars difference, I'll probably buy the MaxLife, just because I've used it before and know it's an excellent oil. I was just wondering what about the SuperTech enabled it to achieve the EC label while the Valvoline does not. Now it appears I know. Thanks for all the discussion, folks!

What about Supertech?

I never saw elemental additive info on a PI sheet, maybe I should look.

MaxLife changes formulas constantly, btw.

More ZDDP?...Oh? If they meet the GF-4 spec, then they have no more than .8% of phosphorus. That's it. In any case, ZDDP isn't wonderful, it just does a good job cheaply. Other additives do the job as well but cost more.

What hidden agenda? We know that phosphorus poisons catalytic converters. The current thought for the next spec, GF-5, is to use a different form of ZDDP that maintains the .8% limit but keeps more of the phosphorus in the oil and allows less to get into the catcons.

Here's the Sequence IV-A cam wear test for GF-4 oils...note that the allowable wear is less than allowed for the old GF-3 spec AND zinc was reduced the same time.
