Castrol HM now energy conserving

A lot of talk about Valvoline Maxlife going with the “energy conserving” rating. Last night I noticed the Castrol High Mileage with the new log is now Energy Conserving as well. Seems to be a trend that Mobil started with theirs...or perhaps, Mobil is just way ahead of the game in this regard.

As I recall, Super Tech's high mileage oil was energy conserving since a long time ago, when very few were not. This seems to be the trend now. I don't know what they're doing differently now to allow to get their oils to pass that requirement, or even what defines that requirement to begin with.

Well it probably means they've reformulated then.

I've been using it for quite a while, and will be in the near future also but I LIKE that it is thick, thick, thick. If it is now resource conserving it would mean they've lowered the HTHS considerably.

I suppose I could blend my way around that though.

Just a point of clarification.

API actually phased out the "Energy Conserving" term with GF-4.

Under GF-4/API SM, there was "Energy Conserving" oil and "Resource Conserving" oil. Energy Conserving offered fuel mileage only benefits.

With GF-5 and API SN, there is only a "Resource Conserving" title that is used, which offers "better fuel economy" and greater emission system protection, turbocharger protection, and better engine operation with Ethanol.

So now, the two GF-5 classifications are API SN and API SN with Resource Conserving.

The Castrol High Mileage already met API SN as far as additive levels go, so if it's now resource conserving that can only mean it's gotten thinner.

I don't believe that viscosity is directly related to fuel economy.

Castrol is awful at giving GTX HM specifications. They may be simply updating the API service symbol for the new bottle.

Well, I was in Wally's yesterday and had to see for myself. Sure enough all of the new bottles were marked "Resource Conserving". Even the 10w30.

Rats. Dummies.

While we are already awash in thinnish 5w30's, I can count the number with a mid to high HTHS on the fingers of one hand. And now one of those has bitten the dust.

To be resource conserving the 5w30 will have dropped from over 3.3 HTHS to something around 3.0. Even the 10w30 was marked resource conserving, so that has gone from around 3.5 HTHS to about 3.1 most likely. Totally pointless, if I wanted something that thin I'd just run Maxlife or any one of the countless already available 30 grades with a 3.0-3.1 HTHS.

NOT HAPPY. I'd like to flog whoever decided to tinker with Castrol High Mileage. They've ruined one of the best High Mileage oils on the market.

I guess I will be doing even more blending of 5w30/10w40's just to get a 30 grade oil with an HTHS in the 3.3 to 3.5 range.

I would agree - that's kind of nutty, particularly when it goes to the 10w30 grade. There are very, very few vehicles, if any aside from a Chrysler straggler or two, that specify a 10w30 in SN/GF-5. What's the point? I can understand the logic with a 5w30 or a 5w-20, even though I may not agree with it, but a 10w30?

I saw that GTX High Mileage was now resource conserving at work and immediately thought KCJeep and his 4.0L are going to very upset lol. Seems that Pennzoil High Mileage is the only one that is not resource conserving now, although according to the pds it is a pretty thin High Mileage oil

You called that one alright. Funny!

I am furthermore irritated as I was in the middle of a multiple OCI and UOA testing series on the stuff. I liked it that much. I'm not spending any more on it for a while, but I'll wait for someone elses UOA/VOA and see if it's going to be worth "blending up" or not.

I am still bummed. It was great running a 5w30 with an HTHS of at least 3.3 and my 4.0 purred like a kitten on it.

I refuse to run around trying to hoard or buy up "old" Castrol High Mileage either, there is still plenty available but I'm feeling a bit betrayed.

Why not just start using QS Defy , nice thick High Mileage oil as well. HTHS isnt as high as GTX High Mileage was but mixing 1 qt of 10w-40 to 5 30 weight qts would boost your HTHS up.
