I have a 3.5 Eco.
Personal view- It is a pretty solid motor, but it has a few things that can go badly due to lube and filter and get crazy expensive/destructive.
1. Cam Phasers...yeah, they "fixed" it in 21, but the design is still basically based on oil pressure actuating the cam phasers. If that oil pressure is slow, as it is on startup, those phasers are unable to completely engage and you get the same basic result of shifting gears while half pushing your clutch-grinding. This also causes wear that causes wobble on those phasers and timing chains being out of alignment which then grind on the chain guides, stretch the chain, and hit the cover plate....all bad. You hear it as rattle on startup.
The new design is somewhat more closed, to retain some oil...but the concept is simply flawed.
However, you can still get a full life out of that setup...so long as you have oil in those phasers to get the pressure high enough to actuate them fully and quickly. That means...you need a super premium oil filter with a 100% functioning anti-drainback valve. If it leaks, even a little...it will leak down and you get that rattle on startup in the morning. The valve is every bit as important as the filtration on this motor.
I tested this on my truck by listening every morning on startup. It only does it on the first startup of the day as oil stays up in the motor after that.
Generally, the Motorcraft FL500S is an ok filter...but I get cam phaser rattle for about 1.5-2 seconds with it. When I switched to a Korean made Mobil 1 filter and Valvoline Restore and Protect...rattle is basically gone or I have to strain to hear it at all.
I get free oil changes from Ford, but they use the FL500S and their Semi-Synthetic 5w30. I get rattle with that setup. When I use the Korean Mobil 1 filter and R and P....rattle is basically gone.
2, Turbo life- The turbo is great, but it has problems with deposits and lube. It is hard on oil and if you go deep on the youtube, the motor has issues with deposit buildup long term. Anything you can do to address that is helpful. I run the Archoil fuel treatment for gas engines a couple times a year...maybe a bottle of Techron now and then. I know its not making it to the Turbo. I don't have a great solution, but it is what it is.
I'm about to do spark plugs...the new ones that have to be torqued to exactly 18lbs in order to orient them to the correct direction via copper crush washer. Should be interesting....
