No it wouldn't but if that's what's needed to meet the required performance then so be it. It also allows for cheaper or better options to be used at any time.

Locking out competition and development doesn't seem beneficial to the public. It's more like price-fixing.

Case in point:
When Dexron VI was a fresh spec one of the only (non dealer) products around here was Petro-Canada and it was $8 a liter. It was only a year or two for the options to grow and the prices to fall.

You seem to indicate that there is some kind of conspiracy going on but I think you lack the understanding of how the industry works.

Fluid development is a costly enterprise. With respect to additive manufacturers, there are three major additive “full package” manufacturers, and a host of other additive manufacturers who make specialty additives, additive components, or specialty chemistries.

What generally happens is, the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) selects a partner or partners to share in the development of the fluid, and this development of course includes R&D costs. The additive manufacturer, the base oil supplier, and OEM then work together to develop the template lubricant.

In order to recoup development costs, the additive manufacturer and the two other partners keep the fluid developments as IP until their costs have been recouped; the OEM selling the fluid only through its dealers for a year or so, the additive manufacturer producing the additive exclusively, and the base oil supplier supplying its base oil exclusively.

Once the R&D and other development costs have been recouped, the additive supplier for example, will then license the formulation to other formulators and blenders, packagers, distributors, etc in cooperation with the licensing agreements stipulated by the OEM.

The OEM will either choose to release licenses based on the chemistry specifications(Chrysler), or based upon performance specifications (GM).

No, I don't think it's a conspiracy but I do think it's more about money. Thanks for the industry info, it's always interesting to hear what you have to say.

My question/concern is this:
How do us 'users' benefit from industry development when an OEM like Chrysler does this?

Think what you will, but it is about meeting a performance objective at a cost target the consumer can afford.

This to me is somewhat of a sour grapes statement because the blender signed up to produce the fluid according to an exact chemistry stated in the license. If the fluid manf. does not want to continue producing the fluid according to the exact chemistry, he can nullify the licence according to the ND agreement.


The customer benefits by having a consistent product.

I can assure you the blender was not complaining but it was a response to my question. The answer is clear to me. You can several suitable products for an ATF+4 application, but if one of them is licensed then you cannot list any others as suitable.
 
Do the latest generation mini-van transmissions use +4? Reason for asking is that we will be replacing our 2000 GC sometime this year with a new/used GC (2012/2013) and I have several quarts of +4 in my stash.

The 2012 Grand Caravan owners manual lists ATF+4 as the service fill.

You keep saying that, but where is your proof? Can you give specific details as to WHY you believe that?

I would agree that IF the license is specific to a unique chemistry package, that may be vastly DIFFERENT than others, but that does not make it "superior".

So, back up your words with proof please. What makes ATF+4 so "superior" to any other licensed product? Don't give me mythology and rhetoric; state in detail the direct points as to why ATF+4 is above others. What is it about their chemistry license that makes it better than other premium ATFs on the market?

I can understand that if there are specific concerns for compatibility, there might be unique inclusions or exclusions for chemistry. An example would be the TES-389 spec from Allison, that was created to replace the formerly licensed DEX III type fluids, and address seal compatibility issues regarding internal pump seals. This became an issue when GM released DEX VI, and Allison had not yet upgraded the seal material for the unique DEX VI chemistry. Therefore, I'd not say that TES-389 was really "superior" from a standpoint of performance; it was merely addressing the unique exclusion of certain compounds for component compatibility issues in a certain exposure range (year of manufacture), and provided a conventional oil base stock option to the robust specs in TES-295. That makes it DIFFERENT; not SUPERIOR. Get the point?

To me, chemistry is secondary to performance. ATF conceptually is just like engine lube, when it comes to the purposes of protection, cleaning and such. I fully agree that the operating conditions are different, and therefore the packages will be targeted uniquely, but it is the CONCEPT of performance vs. chemistry that I'm speaking to. For example, we'd all agree that the HDEO market has many major players; the Big Three are Delo, Delvac and Rotella. They all have different chemistry unique to their specific brands, but they achieve the same tasks, and all do it very well. There is zero reason to believe that some proprietary brand chemistry package is "superior" simply by existing in the bottle.

I'll take performance results over VOA data any day of the year. Performance specs speak to how a product must behave in certain conditions for some duration, etc. Chemistry licenses only speak to the relative metal and organic particles heaped into a mixing tub. So ...

Please be SPECIFIC please and show how your claim is supported by data and facts. Convince me that a chem-pack is "better" than a performance spec. I don't want to hear how Ca is "better" than Mg, or Boron is "better" than Ti, etc. Give me examples, validated by reliable independent sources, showing either detailed lab studies and/or credible real world UOA macro and micro data, that proves the superiority of ATF+4 chemistry over other performance specs. Please provide direct links, and cite your sources.

I never said ATF+4 is a superior fluid. I said the license requirement is superior and the reasoning should be self evident. If you've validated a particular "recipe" based on performance specs and every single blender has to follow that recipe, then every ATF+4 made will meet those performance specs. It's the simplest and most effective way of ensuring that only fluid that meets Chrysler's performance specs winds up in Chrysler transmissions (so long as the consumer actually uses ATF+4).

The old way of licensing, still used for Mercon LV and Dexron VI, allows each lubricant company to self-validate their own recipes. Absent a total tear down of the transmission, the evacuation of the factory fill fluid is nearly impossible. Thus, with a transmission that uses Dexron or Mercon, once a service is performed, there is the potential to always have different chemistries in the transmission. Of course, this has always been the case and has never seemed to cause any performance issues in GM, Ford, and Chrysler transmissions that spec'd either Dexron or Mercon fluid. But once Chrysler felt like it was a potential problem for their transmissions, they instituted a unique approach to licensing their approved fluid. The ATF+4 license absolutely ensures no chance of competing chemistries in a Chrysler transmission so long as licensed ATF+4 is used for the service fill. This absolutely ensures that the OEM performance specs are maintained with each service fill.
 
I am glad that no matter which store I walk into, if they sell any of the licensed brands of ATF+4, I can be confident that it is all essentially the same fluid.

i agree i know each bottle of atf+4 is as consistent as it gets.

on the other hand when I buy dex6 for fleet vehicles at work i always wonder is it a blend or syntetic? the bottle marketing on the dex6 brands do not always tell us what we need to know, and i cannot rely on the license to tell me how they got to the finish line (license requirements).

The DexronVI specification cannot be met with less than a GroupIII base oil, and most are mixes of GroupIII, IV, and V.

SO yes, and as with most motor oils, they are what I would consider a Blend or partial synthetic.

Just to throw in another formulating wrench, I think Shell's new
GTL GroupIII+ would make a fantastic base oil for any ATF.

I asked for proof; please post links, cite sources. I ask for clear information and you give me your iterpretation of corporate directives, with no data or facts to back it up. I understand the difference you are trying to distinguish; that I get. But it still does not asnwer the fundemental questions I have, and show evidence of your claims.

Please provide the clear evidence of the licensing criteria for the ATF+4, as well as the other inferior (the non-"superior") ATF requirements of other brands.



For the record, some specs such as some from Allison are often performance and chemistry and wear rate specific. And they are validated by independent sources; not the lube makers. Therefore, your claim that the Chrysler process "is vastly superior to everyone else's" is false the way I see it.

And let me give you an example of what I consider to be "proof" the way I see it:

Note that Allison specifically says that they will perfom testing via two independent labs; this is NOT self-certification. Further, they have specific chemistry they look for, each depending upon particular applications unqiue to each licensed product. When you open the application link for TES-389, you have to submit not only the chemitry additive info, but also the base stock info; there are several tabs to input data. Therefore, Allison is NOT ONLY looking for performance that would comply with their criteria, but they also are looking for chemistry validation. It's not that they mandate a specific chemistry package; they are looking for competing issues. Allision created TES-389 for three reasons:
1) to have a fluid that would have been equivilant to the former DEX III specs
2) to assure no seal compatibility issues (as expereinced with DEX VI)
3) to provide a lower-cost alternative to TES-295 fluids
As you might see, they don't care about a need for any one chemistry package to be present; they want to assure that certain chemistries do not interfere with older seal materials.

You'll even note that they call for physical inspection of parts (teardown measurements) looking for evidence of wear in certain components.

TES-295 fluids are some of the most robust, heavy duty ATFs I know of on the market. To be licensed, a company must produce a VERY stout fluid that meets extreme performance critera, exhibits certain specific chemical properties, and even results in actual wear within acceptable measurable ranges. I would agree that TES-295 fluids are not suitable for all applications, but in those that they are, I submit that they are beyond reproach, and offer the Allision specs as my proof.

I do not see any evidence you have put forth that shows how Chrysler's ATF+4 spec is "superior" to Allison's specs, simply because the ATF+4 is chemically specific. It is my contention that ATF+4 is a very specific license ONLY in that it makes sure that there is no competing chemical reactions. I would agree that is not a bad thing to have. But that does not, however, make it "superior" to other testing and validation methods. Different? Yes. Superior? No! From what you've told me (yet to be proven with any data, facts, links ...), ATF+4 simply assures chemical compatibilty, and nothing more. Am I wrong in my interpretaion of your claim?

(I don't want to hear about your interpretations; please cite independent sources that would echo your postion, and link the site pages, that give detailed information and criteria, etc).

Again - I understand what you're saying, but it's all just you regurgitating your interpretations at this point. I want to see direct links to back up your claims; show me information that directly supports your position. In short, I don't need you to explain it to me; I ask that you show it to me! Please lnik the Chrysler process documents that you use to infer their superiority to other ATF spec's, and then back that up with independent information that would address chemical validation versus other methods.

Your statement claims that Chrysler ATF+4 has the most critical license spec, being "vastly superior" to any other competitor. I disagree; it may be different, but I don't see anything to show it's superiority. It seems to me that some Allison spec's are AT LEAST as critical, if not more so ... And I have linked my proof to back it up.
