I picked up some Walmart SuperTech Mercon V ATF. I assume it's made by Warren as it has the WPP molded into the bottle bottom.

The label states "Ford Approved", but unlike the SuperTech DEX VI, there is no license # ink jetted on the bottle, nor any mention of it on the label.

It states that it "meets" the Ford Mercon V spec, but also lists
"suitable for use" on Chrysler 3&4, Dexron III&IV, Mercon LV&SP, Nissan J, Toyota T-IV&WS.

Is this a truly Ford licensed/approved Mercon V, or just some "multi-vehicle" formula? Think the Castrol Mercon V or other brands are better in the same price range?
(I'm not interested in paying $8+ a quart for full synthetic. I rather change a cheaper fluid more often)

Since I do a partial drain and fill every year, any problems with mixing the Mercon V with the existing Mercon in the trans?

I believe that Mercon V is a copyrighted name by ford. If the product dosent meet the specs you cannot use the name. But just to be sure someone who really knows will be along in a bit.

I think it strange that ChinaMart stopped carrying Mobil 1 Mercon V when SuperTech came out with theirs, although they probably make more profit from the Supertech brand you would think that they would have a premium product along with a generic product.

You are correct. MERCON is a registered trademark and should not be used on any product or literature pertaining to any product that has not been approved by Ford.

FWIW, I e-mailed Warren and they assured me that it is a fully licensed Ford MerconV formula.

(Try and get any response from ExxonMobil much less one in 24 hours!)

"The Super Tech Mercon V is a fully licensed product. The Mercon V license number from Ford is M5080801. We just received the license number in the last couple of weeks. The application was submitted early this year but the process was slowed at Ford by employee cutbacks. The license number will be jet ink coded on each bottle but the approved formulation hasn't changed
since we started making it early this year. Please let me know if you have any further questions."

Good to hear, as I just did a complete change on my 00 crown vic I just got. I was not able to get the cooler perfectly flushed with new fluid, not to mention the little that was left in the various places of the transmission. But I got the pan, lines, and TC. I let the TC drain 2hrs before it stopped dripping.

The supertech mercon V is very smelly, like detergents and additives. It smells almost like mercon SP. I hope it is better than the warren unilube brand that AAP sells with their name on it. Also the autozone coastal brand was pretty [censored] also. Turned brown in 7k miles.

The only drawback I see, is it is so smelly, the little bit that is spilled on the transmission and pan really smell up the interior when the heat is on. I hope it goes away soon, not to mention if you pull the stick hot, it will take your breath away.
