Super tech filters.... New look *pics*

I went to Wal Mart today to pick up a new ST 3614 filter. I put it next to the older 3614 filter I had laying around. I noticed that the new one looks different and a little smaller. The new one is on the left side in the pic. Is this something I should be worried about?

This is the new E-Core design that Champion Labs has switched to. If you do a search, you will find this has been discussed.

Personally, I'd be more concerned with the old ST-3614 filter because it has a "clicker" type bypass valve.

The only filter I've found like this is the 3614. No other sizes apear to be using this design yet, but I suspect the 3600 to be the next because it uses the same base plate as the 3614.

I think the 3614 has more then 11 applications.

Off the top of my head: Certain Chysler 2.0 and 2.4 and older 3.9s. Toyota trucks and some cars.

If they do the 3600 too, they can include tons of Ford products.

3614 covers many geos (and their clones) and all saturn S's.

I think they meant that the 4 new filter sizes replace 11 old filter sizes.

I just ran one for a little over 3000 miles as a test. Used Redline 5w30 with about 5500 miles on the oil. This is my first use of Redline in this engine and from most people I've heard from, it really cleans things out and filter changes durring inital OCIs help a bit with handling the crud. Also keeps me semi-happy and helps with the withdrawal symptoms from having to wait to change the oil

At any rate, the filter held up very well (sorry, no digital camera so no pictures). Cold startups saw a range of temps from 34F being the lowest and 72F being the warmest. Spent about 2 and a half weeks on the block. Highest ambient temperatures seen were 95F. A decent mixture of city/highway driving. Upon cutting it up, the filter showed no signes of any failure or weak spots. Not scientific, but gives me some piece of mind about this design.
