I'm getting dummer about oil but I'm trying to learn. I have a 2016 Malibu with a 2 litre turbo. I understand it requires 5w30 SN graded oil. Also it requires GF5 oil. The oil I have is SN rated which is Castrol and Mobil and is also Dexos approved. I want the best oil possible so my question is should I buy the new super synthetic oil and please tell me why or why not.

Thank you,
Fred

Any dexos oil will work. I would recommend a full syn oil because of it being turbocharged and GDI. I'm stocked up on napa full syn for my malibu.

I would go with M1 5W30 EP.
Also, those oils are not as complex as huge majority for European cars. However, Euro downsizing trend is affecting American manufacturers so get ready for more complex oils, issues etc.

Fred, the best thing you can do is use a synthetic oil of the weight specified on the oil fill cap (no need for super duper synthetic or other marketing gimmicks) and change it regularly. That turbo needs protection and many manufacturers push oil changes out to every 10,000 miles in their reccomendations to shave $ off their cost of ownership data in tv commercials. That is crazy in a GDI turbo car.

Secondarily, dont please dont drive and then shut down the car instantly as you pull in to a destination. ESPECIALLY after driving spirited or long hot temps. The turbo needs even just a few seconds of idle before shutdown to flush some heat out into the cooling/lunricating oil.

So the worst you could do is use a conventional oil in the wrong weight below the full mark repeatedly for too many miles between changed and run her hard on low quality gas and shut her down quick and hard after smashing the gas stoplight to sroplight to your driveway. That'd be a good way to keep the total life of the car as close to or below 100,000 miles as possible.

If you are referring to the Mobil Super Synthetic, you should understand that this is NOT the same oil as the Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP oils. At just under $23 a 5qt jug at walmart, you can get the better Mobil 1 synthetic or for $26 the Extended Performance. The "Super" synthetic is often more expensive at Pep Boys and such then the better oil is at Walmart.

My choice would be the Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 EP.

Mobil Super Synthetic on PQIA

MSS has a totally different add package than Mobil 1. This is medium Calcium, no magnesium, high Boron and strong Moly oil.
Mobil 1 is high magnesium, low calcium, strong boron and moly oil. Whichever works best for you. MSS is more like QSUD and PP.

If I owned a new DGI vehicle, I'd use an oil with more magnesium and less calcium. For a Dexos requirement, the choice is easy - Mobil 1.
