As for South Florida we love it, it keeps the hurricanes away. Yes I know it is a disaster for others but South Florida has had enough disasters, of all kinds.

I used to follow Joe [censored] religiously. I now find him obnoxious and silly.

They're really hyping this on up and relating it to "climate change" (rolleyes).

The great Joe [censored] says that after this El Niño and subsequent La Niña, global temps should be more accurately measurable.

If you do not think climate change and warmer ocean surface water are related.......Then I am not going to try to explain it to you.

Please, explain it to me. It can't possibly be related to differential heating of the oceans by the sun...

I'll take less snow and warmer temps here in southern New England this winter, thank you very much.

The last strong El Niño was winter 1997-1998. We had more than 12-13" of rain in 12 hours.

There were some mudslide in our neighborhood. 2-3 houses had mudslide from the hillside into their house through front door and garage. It took them more than a week to clean up and several months to repair the damages.

Some houses in San Diego slided down the hills at a completed lost for owners. They didn't have mudslide/flood insurance.

This El Niño is supposed to be even stronger than 1997.

I don't claim to understand the complexities, nor the arguments for (the majority) and against (the minority) global climate change fully (or even partially, really,) but from the article you linked:

Quote:
The reason is simple: As humans put more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, we're trapping more and more heat on the Earth's surface. But more than 90 percent of that extra heat is absorbed by the oceans. So subtle interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere can make a big difference for surface temperatures.

When conditions in the Pacific are neutral, more of that heat is trapped beneath the ocean surface. When a strong El Niño hits, more of that heat is released, essentially transferred to the surface. That's why the Earth's average surface temperatures reached new highs in 1998: due to the combination of global warming and an extremely strong El Niño.

Just weathermen being weathermen, i'll believe it when the rain hits the ground.

Why?

The man knows his stuff. One of top meteorologists in the world. Some years ago, he predicted our current weather and that it was going to be a repeat of the weather in the mid to late 50's. I'm here to tell you that he was right. I was there in the 50's. I know.

exactly. Even the scientists have said a strong el nino doesn't mean more rain as there has been strong ones in the past the didn't generate above average rain.

If accurate, Ca could be in for a dose of Central Tx-style weather, which is best described as "extended periods of drought interrupted by flash-flooding". With the addition of mud-slides.

The guy who wrote the vox article sure editoralizes. I wonder if he's ever been diving or taken physics? He's an editor...probably not.

Maybe he'll explain why CO2 gets all the glory as a greenhouse gas when water vapor makes up almost all of the GG.

Again, I don't know much about climate science, but wouldn't water vapor variations and its effects on the global climate be a cyclic phenomena, while other green-house gases have a more cumulative effect?

The earth acts likej a super giant heat sink..the oceans and especially the ice are absorbing the excess heats so there is (in the minds of some) no global warming. But as the ice melts and the oceans start burping up absorbed heat it will be painfully obvious even to joesixpack what has been happening. And even with all this heat absorption the 15 hottest global years have all occurred since 1997.

But in the end its irrelevant..the world can not afford the price tag to stop it. Just sit back listen to all the arguing back and forth and smile. Thats all you can do.
