Suggested oils for facilities use.

Hello,

I have been going through all of our facilities preventative maintenance schedules and noticed a lack of oil specification or even the use of and decent quality oils in our medical compressors, emergency generators, and work equipment. I would like to switch to a good synthetic oil and keep the number of grades we need down. This is a list of the equipment that I have so far that we have oil changes on.

Compressors and vacuum pumps -
compressor fluid

Emergency Generator -
Cummins engine's -15-40W.

Skid Steer -
Engine: 0-40W or 5-40W John Deere Plus 50
Chain Drive: 0-40W or 5-40W John Deere Plus 50
Hydraulic Oil: 0-40W or 5-40W John Deere Plus 50

Gator -
Engine: 5-40W Torq Guard or Plus 50
Transaxle: Hy-guard
Differential Oil: Hy - guard

Mower -
Engine: 5-40W Torq Guard, Plus 50, or Plus 4
Tranaxle: Hy-Guard

All of the diesel engines I don't why I cannot switch over to Redline 5W-40. It also looks like I can use this instead of the Plus 50 John Deere oil.

For the Compressor oil, Redline has a line called PolyComp that I was thinking of using.

The Hy-Guard replacement has me sorta stuck though. I'm not sure what kind of oil it is as the JD manual says not to use Auto oil or Auto Transmission fluid as a replacement. So I'm not sure if Redline has an oil that would work for a replacement. I see there is another post about the JD Hy-Guard oil and several had suggested an Amsoil or Shaffer's equivalent but I don't have any experience with either of those.

Comments or suggestions? I think I can reduce it down to three types/Grades of oils for all of our equipment.

The only synthetic I have experience with is Redline and I run it in most of my vehicles, so that why I suggested using it.

First off

to BITOG. You live in one of my favorite cities.

Being this is a business you work for I would suggest you contact your local Mobil distributor. He would have these products and it would save you some money.

Nothing wrong with Red Line and the others, but for your company use and a local supplier would probably suite you best. Just my opinion.

Oh, the Hy-Guard is a hydrostatic hydraulic fluid.

With some further digging and looking at what the equivalent JDM D20C fluid rating are for other companies they all list it as a GL-4 type fluid. Redline does carry the MTL and MT-90 fluids that are GL-4 rated.

Thanks for the reminder on availability, that was another one of my concerns as I don't mind ordering the stuff but we do have to use approved vendors (Federal). It does look like we can order direct from Shaffer's I'm just not very familiar with their product line.

Thanks, like I said I'm not stuck on any particular brand. Why do you recommend the 15w40 instead of a 5W or 0W40? If we can I'd like to run one weight all year long and we can get some cold weather in SD during the winter, the 15W isn't typically rated for the lower temperatures as well.

As for the JDM D20C equaling the GL-4 that was more of a guess on my part. In looking at what other companies offer that matches the JDM D20C specs, the same oil is also listed as API GL-4 compliant. Thanks for the advice.

Full synthetic 15w40 will flow well in very cold. Conventional 15w40 is not recommended for sure.

well so much for keeping it to three oils. The diffs on the lawnmowers take GL-5.

Why the guys at JD had to switch and couldn't have used the hy-guard like everything else I don't know. Thanks for the info guys.

i second the mobil recommendation. i work at a paper mill here in michigan. we have been using mobil fluids synthetic and non, exclusively for about 20 years now. there customer support is great. they analyze our quarterly samples free and provide us with a lubrication engineer for new installation, upgrades... if they're not an approved vendor, maybe your employer needs to include them.

Actually the only way I can use a vendor is if they are registered in the Central Contractor Registry (www.ccr.gov).

That pretty dang good customer service though.
