good evening fellas.i have a 2005 jd 5203 tractor.it still has the factory fill deere hydraulic oil in it.i was browsing the oil aisle at walmart and noticed a 5 gallon pail of shell rotella t universal hydraulic oil.i was just wondering if it was any good?how does it stack up against john deere hy gard,i think that is the name of it,hydraulic fluid?

all of my research has shown hygard sets the standard for the rest of the industry. i have several different hydraulic systems, all running hygard/hygard low vis.

i recently purchased a used forklift with no owners manual, contacted the manufacturer on fluid specs and they told me to use their hydraulic fluid, or use jd, thats the fluid spec almost everyone uses, j20c, j20d

I believe the product you are talking about is a 10W hydraulic oil for general construction use, without the friction modifiers you need in a tractor oil, or the viscosity of a tractor oil (ISO 68), 15w30 or 20W-30.
I think Shell's tractor fluids are generally in their Donax line.

If it is straight "hydraulic oil" I would pass. As mentioned above, the additive package and viscosity isn't correct for your application.

Even the Donax fluids don't seem to play nice in the full-size JD's. I've used a few drums of Donax TD fluid in 50 and 55 series JD's and experienced terrible brake chatter.
