Is this the 3.0L V6? If so you are probably overfilling it.

They will read low on the stick until you let them sit overnight. Every one I see is overfilled.

I have this vulcan engine in my Taurus. Checkin imediatelly after shut down, would give a third to half quart overfill max, not 2 quarts. Not even with the engine runnig would give 2 qts diff.

He said it's the tec not the Vulcan. My Vulcan though had a healthy appetite for 5w30, it would consume at least a quart every 1k

I'm talking about the duratec 3.0L DOHC engine. Not the Vulcan (Pushrod).

Vulcans have had some timing cover gasket issues. Check for oily coolant in your radiator.

Are you SURE this is the Vulcan? AFAIK the 3.0 Duratec (DOHC) took 5W-20, not the Vulcan (Pushrod).

Yes. The Duratecs are notorious for keeping lots of oil up high. Let is sit overnight before checking. Very common to find one with 2+ qts overfill from paranoid ppl checking and topping off constantly.

Other than that the Duratecs do have lots of oil leaks. Valve covers, oil pan, timing cover. (in the T section where head, block and cover meet.)

But sudden drops are usually from slow drainage. Let it sit overnight.

They back specd the Vulcan to 5w20, although I always ran 10w30 or 5w30

NO. Keep using 5W-20. These engines have horrible head drainage issues with a 20 weight as it is.

NO. Keep using 5W-20. These engines have horrible head drainage issues with a 20 weight as it is.


Duratec certanly dont have retainment of oil issues in any part, it would drain 60 weight with no delay as compared to average engine. What you talking about? The oil would collect all over the head? Ah?
