Subway calls ‘emergency’ meeting with franchisees as sales plummet

WalMart $6.67 foot long New York Deli sammich. Sometimes they are a bit old and discounted near $5......

Only eat half at a sitting. Haven't been to Subway since the $5 foot long days.

I haven't had Subway food since before Covid.
Ten or fifteen years ago, the subs were pretty good and the five dollar footlong was a real value.
Even the airport locations offered them, a real deal in any airport.
I think the last thing I had from a Subway was a tuna salad sub and it was pretty good, maybe in 2019.
There are few real deals on price or quality on fast food these days.
Subway is not unique in this regard.

We quit going as our go to place due to adopting 3 kids who are picky eaters and it's hard to manage quickly when in a long line, which also seems to be a norm these days at Subway.

I did the Jared diet with success and have always enjoyed Subway, but now it's rare, unless I get a hankering for a meatball sub.

Just back from Subway with my wife.

Great food but my ego took a hit no cute woman called me handsome🙂

Wife just back from Denver on United.

Great trip she said.

That said, I will offer my humble opinion on why Subway is in trouble. Or rather, I will let W. Edward Deming say it for me. “Uncontrolled variation is the enemy of quality”. There may be other reasons they are in trouble, such as competition that have bumped up their game, but imho, variation is enough of the problem with Subway, to explain why they are in trouble.

I have been to Subway shops that are top notch. The employees are on top of it, with quickly helping you, make you feel welcome, move you right along, and prepare your sandwich exactly as you ask. The store always smells of fresh baked bread. And the customers swarm, because of this.

These Subway locations are too far and few between. Most are staffed by employees that don't seem to care if you are there or not.

Variation from store to store is not a problem unique to Subway, and is widespread in the franchised fast food industry.

And it also occurs at McDonalds.

Yup. I have seen McDonalds restaurants that are operated so well, they are one of the most popular spots in town, and others that are on the verge of being closed down by the local health inspector, and losing their franchise.

I used to think that the only fast food joints that seemed to know how to reduce variation, from one restaurant to another, was Chick-Fil-A and In-N-Out. But with expansion, I have seen that even In-N-Out seems to be losing control of some of their restaurants.

You get dried sticks for French Fries no matter the location-JMHO.

Not a fan of toothpick sized fries?
The "premier" French Fries are Five Guys-JMHO.
I can't understand how you can screw up freshly sliced potatoes......but yea....not a fan.
I can make better fries at home with a couple of cut length wise potatoes in a skillet with a little oil.....

My wife is a big foodie and we will eat out every once in a blue moon.

Our budget when we do? $5 a person.

Here's why. We can easily make a gourmet meal ourselves with minimal hassle for $5 each.

As for fast-food which Subway frankly is, it's more like a $2 to $3 budget per person. With all the freebies and 'just $1 with purchase' offers, there's really no point in paying full price anywhere anymore.

Even then we avoid the red slime, fake tuna, and yoga mat factories. Subway scores a perfect three for three in those categories.

Chick Filet if you have the credentials is a home run. The will do everything for a little amount of money from you.
$10,000 upfront fee = instant success (when was the last time you didnt see 25 cars waiting in line for a chicken sandwich?

What does a location cost to build, Million plus? Subway has far lower standards.

We just got a chick fil a, Main Street just outside the Fort Worth Stockyards...It's a bust! 8am Saturday morning, 4 car in the drive thru.
Far as fast food goes...One of the nicest/cleanest facilities in the area.
