subsitutes for Toyota-T IV

I heard someone mention mobil 3309 before. Please post what subsitute ATF you used for Toyota transmissions that specify toyota T-IV. or is everyone here using T-IV from the dealer??

I've seen the 3309 in auto parts stores before... I can get T-IV cheaper from parts wholesalers online. ATF is one of those things where using the real stuff is a good idea, unless you have gobs of data showing that an alternative is an enhancement in every way.

I can't find 3309 around here, so I'm using T-IV from the dealer, since the price difference between 3309 online and retail at my dealer is negligible.

I have a 2003 4Runner and that requires type IV. I did a lot of reading and came to the conclusion to stay with the Toyota type IV. The dealer sells it for about $5-$6 a quart. There are many multi-vehicle formulas that claim to work, but they aren't much cheaper. Mobil 3309 has been used by others and seems to work. I read a response from Mobil on another forum that stated it was not intended for use as a substitute for Type IV. My recommendation would be to use only Toyota type IV.

Nothing would work better than Amsoil ATF for this application IMO. That's what I use.

Mobil 3309 is the ATF for certain Aisin-Warner Transmissions.

Aisin-Warner nor Toyota makes ATF. ExxonMobil, and maybe others, make the ATF. It isn't synthetic.

I asked Pennzoil about their multi-vehicle atf fluid. See below:

Thank you for your inquiry.

Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle automatic transmission fluid does meet the service requirements and is completely compatible with the Toyota Type T-IV spec. The Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle atf does not meet the Toyota Type "WS" spec.

Here is the question I asked them:

Your technical sheet indicates that Pennzoil's multi vehicle ATF can be used in Toyota transmission. Does that include Toyota Transmissions that specify Type IV? And is the Pennzoil multi vehicle ATF compatible and can it be mixed with the Toyota Type IV?

I would bet that the Type T-IV formulation is just a Dextron III fluid with a lower cold pour point; a characteristic that most all synthetic Dextron III rated AFT's already have.

Has anyone tried the Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle in a Toyota that Specifies Type IV? I am not quite ready to use it. I still go to the dealer and buy the type IV. Maybe I will take a leap of faith when my warranty period is over.

I thought you didn't have to buy the toyota brand only, what about the magnum moss act? or has toyota covered themselves saying it's a lifetime fluid??

You are most likely correct. I tend to be a bit conservative.

Toyota doesn't say that you have to buy Toyota labeled ATF. They say for you to buy an ATF that meets T-IV spec. There is a difference.

Valvoline's Maxlife ATF claims Toyota Type IV compatiblity. I've seen it for $3.7 per qt at Advanced Auto and Autozone. I've used Amsoil Universal ATF for the past 30kmi with excellent results and plan to use it on my next flush as well.
