Just bought a 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon with 2.5 four. Also have a 2003 Forester that uses a ST3395 filter as did our 1990 Legacy 2.2L.

This new OBW requires a tiny oil filter (can't remember the number). It's maybe one third as big. Question is, why the tiny size? Looks like the bigger one from previous years will fit. Thoughts?

Make sure it doesn't rub on any other parts...especially as the engine is revved up, or the suspension is at maximum travel. The tiny sizes are GOOD for the following reason: since you can probably skip changing the oil filter until every other change, there is less old oil left in the smaller filter!

Larger filters are overkill, the small ones filter great. I use WIX on my Subaru(s), and the particulate counts are stellar...they do a great job, even if they are small.

I don't know what filter number you'll need, but I'll echo the recommendation to use a Wix/Napa Gold. They are my favorite for the suby.

The Wix 51365 fits my 06 Forester and 07 Legacy. Both are 2.5's. Probably the right one for your application, but, check first. Oh, it fits the auto transmissions, too, if you ever get crazy and want to change it!
