I just picked up a Subaru oil filter from the local dealer for $7 retail. Made in Japan Tokyo Roki, the parts guy said they have gone back to these and will probably be stocked for the foreseeable future. I got the 15208AA100. At $7 there is no need to frig around with sketchy aftermarket stuff whose quality seemingly goes up and down faster than a fiddlers elbow.

These are really nice filters.

The build quality is nice but I have my suspicions about their filtration efficiency.

The MSL57055 (MICROGARD SELECT) from O'Reilly Auto Parts is what I use and I would in no way whatsoever suggest anything about this product is sketchy. The build quality is excellent and it is among the top performers for filtration efficiency currently available, not to mention that it exceeds the bypass spec that so many Subaru folks are enthusiastic about. It's the bees knees when it comes to oil filters one could use on a Subaru engine 🐝🦵

Let me reopen this oft discussed can of worms.

How relevant is the high bypass pressure spec
when the stock filter is cellulose

vs a high flow filter such as a Fram titanium or old fram ultra? With synthetic media.

The toyo roki is a very solid filter, but its cellulose and nitrile.. So while the build quality is good.. I'm not sure I'd call it a great filter.

FUN QUIZ!

The pic of your filter shows the standard Subaru logo, which includes six "stars." Wuzzup wit da stars, and what do they signify? And is there a missing seventh star?

Agree 100%

I also dont understand why subaru has 5+ different filters when kia and hyundai can make do with 1 for 20 years that also fits the 1981 deere 850 diesel tractor.;)
(yes the 1.3L yanmar diesel now has a kia filter on it)

Maybe a manufacturer that has a “one size fits all” filter should rethink that, given the rate of their engine failures. 🤔

I kid, I kid!

Let me go put my flame suit on. 🔥

I am currently using an OG Fram Ultra XG7317 with wire backing on my Turbo Subaru engine and I still have two more of these to use. I also have 11 MSL 57055 filters.

I think I would prefer to use the Ultras in hot weather and the bypass Boogeyman approved filters in cooler weather 👻

I think its a subaru thing, maybe over engineering, or over thinking engineering? It does take a certain kind of crazy to stick with their flat engines and symmetrical drive train layout...

does it say made in japan on it? they were sourcing them from Indonesia IIRC. (black toyo roki's)
Yes it has Made in Japan right on it. This is why I posted this info.
Is this for the turbo engine?

Is this for the turbo engine?

My NA one takes 15208AA21A filter, I think. Not sure where it's made - I'll have to look, but I think it's made in Indonesia.
Some turbo apps use this filter (eg STI) up to 2021 as well as older non turbo 2.5.

I was told that they are a star cluster known as the Pleiades. The logo is just a simplified version of the constellation.

BING + O = BINGO

"The stars on the Subaru logo represent the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the "Seven Sisters" constellation, which is called "Subaru" in Japanese. The largest star symbolizes Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company, while the five smaller stars represent the five companies that merged to form it in 1953. The six stars are used because only six of the Pleiades are easily visible to the naked eye. The logo's blue background and silver stars are meant to resemble a clear, starry night sky, paying homage to the celestial inspiration."

As opposed to "Yugo," which is the gutteral, incoherent sound one makes after their tenth shot of Slovakian vodka, just before their unconscious head thuds onto the bar countertop.

What defines a "high flow" oil filter? There really isn't much dP vs flow difference between them with hot oil (around a 2-4 PSI difference), even at 10 GPM flow.

stocked up on some of these made-in-japan 15208AA100s last year. first one went in last month.

from my perspective, a filter that i actually trust to not be torn or leaky or otherwise defective is worth a lot more than one with amazing specs that i don't trust. and time and time again on this forum we see one brand after another eat into their quality headroom until, often, they eventually putout something faulty. i personally almost got burned by a synthetic endurance [luckily read all about their spring seating failures right before putting it in].
