I maintain my moms Subie Forester. Its at about 60k miles. I notice at 75k it calls for changing fuel filter. Fuel filter is in-tank in the fuel pump/float assembly. Look it up on YT sometime if you’re bored. Im not looking forward to that.

I would skip that. You would be surprised at how clean gasoline is these days.

If you have to replace the fuel pump then replace the filter.

I know on a Suburban I had the fuel filter before the fuel pump was more like a sock.

Brand name stations, especially Top Tier have checks and balances built in.The pumps have efficient filters on the pumps. The stations have a maintenance company that comes out for service. The monitor on the wall ,keeps track of the tank, amount of fuel and their is even in the tank a water monitor that measures inches of water. If by some accident a cap was left off, and a large amount of water got in to contaminate the tank,it would show up on the print out.The station owner would have to have to have the tank actually pumped out.
As a Petro Semi Driver,I would ask for the print out, when arriving at a station, mostly to check on capacity. But if I saw that the tank had for instance,3 inches of water,I would report.Lots of tanks normally have a bit of water, but if the cap gasket was compromised I reported it.
The pick up tube isn't down to the very bottom.Long story short, myself I've never changed a fuel filter by a car mfg. recommendation. So I.M.O ,their are enough checks and balances built in not to worry.
