Friend wanted to change his oil so I told him to buy some and come over.
Last changed at the Subaru dealer about 5k miles ago.

Nitrile adbv , cardboard end caps, no tears, tiny filter, $6.59 from Amazon. Might as well just use an OCOD... I think there are better filters for the money.

I was able to spin the old filter off with my hand... It was not tight at all. If you have changed a filter on a Subaru it is in a tight spot. I was surprised when it came off without the wrench.

We put in Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 , and a fram ultra 6607. Probably get a fram ultra 7317 next time for a little more capacity?

I have the same Subie.

From everything I've read, these engines like a little thicker oil.

You can do whatever you want, but so far into my ownership, I've been running a synthetic HDEO in the summer (like Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck right now) and either GC or Mobil 1 0w30 in the winter.

This car is short tripped to death by my wife.

Not bad.

Those EJ25 will run on just about anything. 5w30 is recommended by my '99 manual also lists 10w30 and 10w40 as acceptable. I often run a 5w20 or a 5w20 +XwXX mix in the winter without issues or consumption. You do not need HEDO in a NA subie. I am cutting some HEDO in mine only because I got a gallon jug for $5.

As for the filter, go with a NAPA Gold or Wix number 57055 next time. Fram Ultra does not have a filter that meets spec, particularly the 27psi bypass. Likely, the Ultra is going into bypass a lot now. Now, there is a Subaru-Specific Fram but with orange paint only (rather than blue like the OEM).
