How many miles do you have with the Delvac now, and how does it compare to Extra-S?

It seems like the closest thing to SF MTL-R, but I plan to keep using Extra-S until more reviews are available on Delvac in Subaru 5MT.

Yep, that's it. It's funny because the Extra-S reminded me of the MTL-R as well and I'm nearly just as happy with Delvac as I was with MTL-R.

I guess it's the lack of LS additives in Delvac that makes it a good fit. I think I have around 8k on it.

Good to hear good experiences with the Extra S. So far the only complaints I've compiled are extreme cold performance. However, my car is kept in a garage all winter, and I'm not against installing a block heater either if needed!

I do like the 'feeling' of running an approved fluid.

Meaning, you're not sold on the Delvac just yet? Is it shifting quality, synchro engagement.. ?

I'm sold on Delvac I just haven't been running it long enough yet. MTL-R was my favorite, and Delvac does seem to shift a bit easier than Extra-S. Synchro engagement is good.

Sorry, but, that's a pail, not a drum.

At work we use empty 120lb (16 gallon) grease and gear oil kegs as garbage cans. Very cool.

Did you ever try Motul Gear300 75W90 alone? Or Motul MotylGear 75W90 alone?

Did you ever try Motul Gear300 75W90 alone? Or Motul MotylGear 75W90 alone?


I've tried:

1. Motul Gear 300 alone.

2. 75% Motul Gear 300 and 25% Lighweight Shockproof

3. 75% Lighweight Shockproof and 25% Motul Gear 300

And now the Subaru Extra-S. Didn't get to try #3 in the Winter, but I suspect it would have been fine. The first 2 shifted well in the winter.

I saw a thread or two at IWSTI, where some STI owners were stating that the MotylGear (semi-synth) had better synchro action than the Gear300 (full synth). I'm not sure if this was also true at winter temperatures.

I found it interesting in your VOA thread that MolaKule essentially advised that Extra-S was not the best possible lube for the rear differential. OK for that application, but not the best. I recall that in other threads he made a strong distinction between "gear lubes" and "manual transmission lubes". A "pure" gear lube will be of higher viscosity and will have a different additive package than a MTL, as I recall him saying. The Extra-S seems to land in the middle somewhere, I think.

Update: 10 degrees F this morning (-12 celcius), shifted like butter. I guess the comments about Extra S not shifting in the cold must mean extreme cold. Because it worked better this morning than anything else I've tried in the past.
