has anyone used these as a preventative part of a coolant change instead of the brown premixed slime sold at the dealerships?

Seems like it's made from the same food grade materials that Subaru sells in a bottle...

As someone who was into Subaru heavily for about 16 years, you're better off just skipping that stuff altogether. If you're losing coolant heavily, you just need to change the head gaskets, it's really just a part of Subaru life.

Also, don't bother using OEM or even Asian formula aftermarket coolants, just use a Dexclone like Napa 1EXT or Supertech. I used the cheapest Dexclones my entire time owning Subys and never once had an issue. In fact, I think they run cooler on Dexclone because there is no phosphate to coat the cooling system passages.

If he's not losing coolant I wouldn't use those cubes. There's not a lot of flow under the cap until it gets up to temp, so the bits will just get pushed into the caps pressure relief.
If it really is just preventative maintenance just get the dealer stuff or Holts Radweld.
If losing coolant just scrap it 😁
