man I would love that as a second car. 70% of my driving is just me... 10% is 2 people its the other 20% of the time it wouldnt work.. and I have no place to park a second car :\

Nice looking car. I would love one of those if I wanted a sporty second car. Doesn't seem like Toyota really did anything except put in a FI system.

Toyota adds their badge and sheeple will buy.

Hey, get used to it. Sharing platform development is a HUGE cost saver, maybe the car can be priced cheaper now.

It's a cool little ride with some personality, thanks to Subaru.

Really now. I don't see a Toyota badge on the vehicle.

Like someone posted, I think Toyota added some direct injection technology or something. You really think that is going to make the Toyota faithful flock to this car?

As we can see from your post, though, it is going to give the Toyota haters something else to keep themselves amused.

I've never been a fan of garage queens or owning a second car, but if this delivers on the hype I'm going in, and I'll probably drive it 3K a year. At this point, I like the styling of the Toyota better, but we'll have to see what they're like when it's actually done, and what the functional differences are between the two.

wow, you've already lined up to hate this car...

RWD, manual transmission, light weight. It seems like you'd like this car? I guess the Toyota/Honda bias trumps that.

seriously, what's not to love about this car?

Its funny that you say I have a toyota/honda bias when we currently own and have owned both makes in the not distant past.

The only bias that exists is self-made by you. I state displeasure based upon real occurrences. That's not bias.

I have no problem with the car. I dont hate the car. I think the last Supra that hit US shores was one of the best cars ever. (bias??!?)

I just think that as a subaru, it would only sell to boy racers who want something to differentiate from a WRX. With a toyota badge, other people/sales will come into the picture. Sorry, but that is the reality. Give me one good reason why it wouldnt be the case...

What happens is that Subaru (who is partly owned by Toyota) takes the risk and does most all of the design effort, but knows that they arent a household name for vehicle consideration in the USA. Toyota knows that there are a ton of retiring baby boomers who will only buy camries, who may have a few bucks for a fun car. Slap their badge on it and it will sell because more will consider going into a toyota dealer than a subaru.

Bad move? Nope, its smart. But it is what it is, and sheeple's buying decisions are along those lines. I know lots of them.

My only complaint about the car is that while IMO it is better looking, it has too much similarity in look to me to the nissan Z.

OK, well, from the articles linked...

Quote:
The new GT 86 is based on an entirely new platform and features a low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell. It is powered by the same engine as its Subaru sibling - a 2.0 liter, naturally-aspirated petrol engine - but will only deliver 200 HP as opposed to Subaru’s promised 300 HP. That being said, the base BRZ will come with the same 200 HP that the new GT-86 is sporting, bringing these two models closer than originally anticipated.

Only the front fascia, badges, and maybe wheels separate the BRZ from its Toyota—and Scion—sibling.

So it seems that we are very much talking about the same car.

And the car looks like a great one, dont get me wrong. But you can't deny the common thought process with many toyota buyers. Sorry, it is what it is, and Im free to point it out.

It shouldnt detract from the car being what it is, and I look forward to some more detailed reviews and driving one.

But Im sure the rebadge was a sales tactic. Like GM in the 1980s.

Yes, great. But I didn't post a link about the Toyota car. I posted link about the Subaru car.

So your post about the Toyota sheeple is basically meaningless to what this thread is about, which is the Subaru version.

Now, if I posted a link to the Toyota car, and you then said something like "it's a Subaru BRZ, but they slap a Toyota badge on the front and I bet it outsells the Subaru version two to one, because people who drive Toyotas are sheeple" than that might be a relative post to make.

Of course, if that was something you posted, I might say something like "People who hate Toyota are also sheeple."

I'm watching this car closely. I said for years that if something like this came out (reasonable power, price, weight, and RWD+MT) I'd be all over it. However, between then and now I got bit a little by the torque bug, and got a wife and a dog, so I bought a WRX instead.

But, I'm really glad this car actually made it to production and am looking forward to seeing what they do with it over the years (especially Subaru). With its weight and CG it should be a great car in the twisties for those who don't want a convertible (miata).

I hope the price can actually stay reasonably low though. For a few thousand more, you can get a base Mustang GT, or a 370z, which have quite a bit more power.

Funny thing, I was thinking that I see a lot of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe in these cars, and was going to point to the Z as an example of a car that had the same idea but managed to look different.
