The reason it does not flow out through the media to the center hole is an interesting but neglected topic.

I think it always does given enough time. When the center tube drains out there is air. I think there is the adbv, vacuum, and capillary attraction in the media preventing filters to drain out the same. The clean side chamber is also pretty small so the pressure on the media is pretty small. Without an adbv of course it will drain out fast. Some medias may drain through faster than others. Some may never seem to drain but given enough time they will.


The test I did on the PureOne sat for a whole week with the base down, and all the oil trapped between the media and can was still in the filter.

Did you cut open the filter to determine there was no oil in it?

Try doing the experiment I did on the PureOne in the link I posted earlier. You can do it on a used or even a new oil filter if you want.

Take a filter and fill it up with new or used oil through the center tube. Put something (I used folded Q-Tips) in a couple of the base plate inlet holes to open the ADBV while filling so the whole space between the media and can will be full of oil and no trapped air. Keep track of how much oil it took to completely fill the filter. Remove whatever you used to hold the ADBV open so the ADBV is in the sealed position. Turn the filter base down and let any oil initially drain out of the center tube - measure how much oil that was. Then place a funnel in a suitable dry container so the filter can be set base down in the funnel. Let it sit and monitor how much oil drains out of the filter. When I did this test on the PureOne, it sat for a whole week and no additional oil leaked out of the center tube. I then opened up the ADBV and let all the oil drain out and measured it and it basically equated to what I calculated it should be.

You can do this test without all the oil volume measurements. Just start with a dry container when you put the filter base down in the funnel after letting the center tube drain before putting it in the funnel. Any oil that leaks out from between the media and can will be seen in the container. Used a glass beer bottle, which made it easy to see any drained oil, and a funnel fit in the neck of the bottle nicely. Somewhat correct, but you still haven't explained why the air in the "clean side chamber" doesn't move into the top of the "dirty" side to relieve the partial vacuum that keeps oil at the bottom from exiting through the bottom (base) end of the media.

I agree with Z06 that sometimes they don't drain even slowly.

If a dome end bypass valve leaked and allowed air into the dome end of the filter it could cause the oil between the media and can to drain through the media ... the same as punching a small hole in the dome end to make all the oil drain out of the filter, which I do on my vertical base down mounted filters.

Recall my post years ago about the FOMOCO filter off my new Ranger was full of oil when I cut it open, and it squirted used oil out about a 1/2 foot for about 2- 3 seconds.

Still haven't figured THAT bizarre scenario out, but now I chalk it up to Ethanol dilution of the oil causing varnishing of the media - This varnishing was a concern with API SN and ILSAC specification - mainly related to E85, but I got a tank of watery ethanol on one fillup in the new truck. Back before all the tanks were replaced with poly tanks after the MTBE groundwater contamination fiasco...

All the oil seen in that aluminum roasting pan was trapped in the filter between the media and the can on the "dirty" side:

Been changing my sis-in-laws 2.5 Legacy oil for 5 yrs now and never unscrewed a full filter regardless of manufacture. Upon filter cutting, there has always been about 1/2 cup of oil in all of them. It eats a quart or so every few K but has been rock solid thus far.
 
I took delivery of a new 2020 Outback with 2.5l. I drove home from the dealership and drained the factory fill at 32 miles. Refilled with Royal Purple Break-in oil and changed the drain plug to a Gold Plug magnetic version (AP-10). Ran the break-in oil for 500 miles, drained it out switched to the Subaru black Japanese made oil filters (15208AA160) - I bought 5 - 2 packs of the Japanese filers on ebay, costs was about $10 each, and I confirmed they are true OEM's and not counterfeits:

I refilled with Toyota Synthetic 0w20. I find the Toyota 0w20 to be a little bit better oil than the Subaru factory Idemitsu oil. The Toyota oil has a generous amount of ZDDP and Moly, which is crucial for control, as well as being a magnesium free formulation, which eliminates concerns about corrosive-wear damage to metal parts.

The area of slight concern with the Subaru Idemitsu oil is it has a bit of a high Noack value of 14%. Another oil that actually has more Moly and Zinc than the Idemitsu with slightly lower Noack is Eneos 0w20 Synthetic Racing Street Oil.

Here are the virgin oil numbers I received from Blackstone:
Zepro 0w20 Eco Medalist Advanced Moly oil - Moly:668 / Zinc:804 / Boron:264 / Noack:14% / TBN: 9%
Eneos 0w20 Synthetic Racing Street Oil - Moly:835 / Zinc:811 / Boron:358 / Noack:12% / TBN:6.8%
Toyota 0w20 (ExxonMobil Special Blend) - Moly:656 / Zinc:753 / Boron:173 / Noack:11% /TBN:10.2%

I like the Toyota oil because it competes well with solid Moly and Zinc numbers and a strong TBN , which supports the Toyota recommendation of a 10K OCI - even though I do 5k OCI's. Very low Noack oils like Amsoil Signature are excellent oil but lack much Moly and Zinc --- and it seems all Japanese engine manufactures always use high Moly and Zinc oils.

I am hopeful my breakin procedure helps control oil burning. So far at 7k miles I am not seeing much oil loss. I also do a " flood start" after an oil change so the engine cranks at about 200RPM priming and pressuring the oil system, filling the filter without starting the engine.
 
I've done 21 oil changes on my '13 Outback with the FB25 engine. By far the majority of the filters are NAPA Gold, but I've also used a few Subaru 15A filters, a couple Fram Ultra, a couple MicroGreen filters, and a M1.

I've only had one occasion when the ADBV failed. All of the rest of the filters have been full of oil when removed. I honestly can't recall what filter it was that had a bad ADBV. But considering the simplicity of oil filter technology and the harsh environment that they function in, it seems totally unrealistic to not expect occasional failures.
 
Two OEM filters on the bench 2.0 2018 Crosstrek I don't see a problem 5k interval appropriately. Usually drain oil crack filter loose pull in approximately 5min later. I also pre fill filter before installing.
