I read about that online while just looking more into the problem I had and waiting endlessly for the updates to all finish. I saw though where many said that it doesn't work? Have you been able to do that and if so what is the process? Just enter the Windows 7 code/key while installing Windows 10?
Wouldn't have mattered in the end though even if I could have used his Windows 7 code/key to activate the initial clean install of Windows 10 I did. I would have still had to reinstall the OEM OS( actually restore factory image )to get it as the system didn't come with any discs with the # on it and the sticker on the case fell off at some point and is gone.
THANK GOD when I helped my Brother get it the 1st thing I did after we unpacked it and started it up was do the system recovery discs. If I hadn't, I would have been paying for a Windows 10 license for him after screwing up.
Once the updates were done the upgrade process went smoothly as it has for me every other time as said ^^^. If I hadn't needed that one update/patch I would have been done with it hours earlier and it would have only been a minor annoyance.
Here's what happened to me. I bought a used Dell Latitude E6410 off of eBay. I also bought an SSD and more memory for the laptop. Laptop arrived damaged but still worked. The seller sent me a new one, but I wanted to get this one up and running. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional via the COA and upgraded to 10. Once the new laptop arrived, I swapped my SSD into it. Windows did not like that and decided to un-activate itself. After speaking with MS support, they directed me to download the new build of Windows 10 from their website (the online upgrader/installer). I used this and installed a copy over top of my present install. It kept all of my data/applications. Then I went to the Activation page and saw that the OS was still un-activated. As promised by MS, I went ahead, keyed in my 7 Pro COA key, and it activated no problem.
