Going slow and backwards seemed to have some advantage.
Going fast was generally a bad idea, even for vehicles with lots of clearance.

A guy followed me into a 3' pool in his Chrysler Concorde. My daughter (27) was a little girl sitting in the back seat and said, Daddy, that car is floating away.
I wouldn't consider it "getting through" if the car doesn't run on the other side.... and no way I'd drive through that, I'd rather call the tow truck before attempting it, he can set me down on the other side...
Stuff like this might be why I have so much contempt for the general public. The sheer number of stupid people appearing at the same spot at the same time is more than my mind can process. A flat refusal to go back and drive around the hazard speaks to the stubbornness, selfishness and stupidity of some people. Ugh.....Can't even believe what I'm watching. If insurance companies would start denying claims for their policyholders deliberately driving through a hazard, the attitude of "meh, I'm covered" may change, and we might see less of this.
