Study on Air Filter Condition and Fuel Economy

The only reason I change a filter out is when it starts getting really dirty to the point where it starts to actually restrict air flow. I've seen my friend's f150 sludge oil within 1000 miles because the filter was really, really bad and the airflow was severely limited. The only time I wanted and always clean filter... Or just a screen really, was at the track with the mustang.

Not getting the connection between a dirty air filter and oil suddenly turning to sludge (?). Maybe if the PCV system wasn't working because of a clogged air filter ... but I can't see how a dirty air filter would cause that to happen.
