Need a little help for a 'rookie' auto maintainer. I was going to pull the rear wheel of my '94 Jag XJS but wasn't able to. I didn't have a problem with the lug nuts. However, when it came to getting it off, wouldn't budge at all. What tricks etc are there to remove a stuck wheel.

Thread the lugnuts back till they contact the wheel, and back them off a few turns. If kicking and prying don't work, take the car out for a short drive with some turns and braking.

What other people have said. make sure that the vehicle is supported by jackstands and not just the jack alone.

The reason for threading on the lug nuts is so when you break the wheel loose from the hub your nice wheel's don't fall and hit the pavement.

If a big rubberized metal hammer to the backside of the rim won't work, or kicking of the rim, chrome's idea will work. Just make sure that they (lugs) are on almost all the way on like he said, and only drive it far enough to take a turn or two. That should break the rust seal.

'this

It should not take more than one trip around the block. When the wheel is off clean the face of the hub where it contacts the wheel and apply a smear of antiseize paste. Tirerack has something to for this that I have not used but it might be something like builder's felt or tyvec or similar fabric that is cut to fit? I already own the antiseize paste so I have not tried that.

Get a pressure treated 4x4 about 5 feet long and whale on it from behind. Leave the car in neutral so you can spin the tire while you do it.

The 4x4 works better and spreads the force better than something like a baseball bat or mallet.

I had this on my Mazda 3... just put the lugnuts back on snug then back them off a spin or two and then go around your block and make a hard turn (might have to go 20mph and turn w/out breaking.)

Should come undone... then limp it home and wallah!

Happens with aluminum wheels, first try hitting it with a block of wood and hammer that sometimes dislodges it.

If that doesn't work hand tighten the lug nuts and go drive it in a couple circles on your street, should pop.

Wire brush the hub and put a little never seize on the back of the wheel, than it will come off next time.

This gets them off 98% of the time.

That's how I've done it as well, I tried to hit the edge of the tread as its designed for a beating unlike the sidewall, but tires are pretty tough.

Spruce .. or pine ??

When using the sledge, use the side of the hammer part, not the normal hitting face.
Never had to research another technique. It always works.

Well, OK... sometimes liberal loose juice is applied.

Its summer and boredom is setting in. We all need an interesting story to read. So...drink heavily for several hours and then try the the sledge hammer routine. Write it up on BITOG the day after!!

But seriously, the hammer method works. Give it a try.

Rubber mallet and tap the rim. You can bang on parts of the tire of course. I ve seen them do it at Discount Tires when rims are stuck on hubs because of rust.

Hammers and pry bars can ruin the wheel bearings. The best would be to use a wheel puller if you can. That is not practical with most wheels. But some spoked wheels can be pulled on. If your wheel has a dust cup, remove the dust cup. You may find a nice center indentation for the middle of the wheel puller.

Otherwise, I would apply some penetrating oil over night. Then loosen the lug nuts a couple turns, and drive slowly. Maybe drive over a curb if necessary.
