stripper $12995 focus

They're decent cars. I didn't care much for the seats since they had no bolstering. The chassis is willing, but the seats might as well have been pews. Hard and flat, so the seat belt was doing the holding around every corner.

Really, it's getting a 1990's sized family car interpreted for the 20teens. Today's "compacts" dwarf the "midsize" cars of 20 years ago.

Sure it's a good deal. Remember, Ford allows dealers to sell extended factory warranty over the internet for cheap. I'm seeing Flood Ford is selling the $50 deductible Basic Care 8yr 100k policy for $780. Your car doesn't have half the stuff covered by other plans.

So your transportation needs are met for 8yrs for $14K.

Your main competition is a bus pass.
 
We BITOGers are similar to farmers complaining about the weather, no matter what it is.

One minute we're complaining about the complexity, added frills, and expense of today's cars. Then, we're complaining about steel wheels and lack of cruise control on a daily driver.

My current 3 year old car with roll up windows is the first I ever owned with cruise control, LOL. And, it was standard!. I dread the day the hinge on my $23 flip phone wears out. Woe is me.


Often, these cars are offered as a loss leader to lure people in and convince them that for just $50 more a month for 6 years, they can have a much better car.

Even X-plan pricing shows $14,800 for the cheapest Focus S, before a few other charges I'm sure the dealer will ad.

It's still a must-have. Heat alone doesn't do much for defrosting windows. Hot dried air works miracles on cold, humid winter days.
 
I do try to get AC. I'll buy a rust free heap from North Carolina with it broken beyond hope though.

I kinda liked the Versa, real basic transportation. Might have gone for it too, had it any sound deadner.

Hard to find a car with stick, crank windows, no RKE, etc. The Mirage has all the bells and whistles but it's beyond me how they pull that off--unless if the corners are cut elsewhere. Eek.
 
Eljefino looking to buy a new car?! I never thought I'd come to see such a thread!

I'd say go for a new Saturn...but sadly that is no longer possible.

I say go for it. IMHO, safety is one of the main reasons to drive a relatively modern vehicle if you can afford to do so. The safety over modern vehicles from vehicles 10 years older is huge. If you can afford a modern and safe vehicle, then this is an easy decision.

There's very colorful videos floating around on Youtube on what happens to your head if you have a side impact to your vehicle without curtain airbags.

Well of course the stars have to line up right for me to buy new. It's also notable that I drive 118 miles a day for work now. I don't care for safety aside from having a decent "safety cage" eg stiff chassis which has other performance benefits.
 
118 miles, ouch. I do 90 and it's pretty bad. At least one of us isn't driving an 18mpg truck doing that (double ouch).

Agreed. One of the last truly bad cars being built.
 
I'd have no problem driving a $12995 "stripper" focus. I paid a bit less than that for my 2011 SE model after they already released the 12s.

The S model has rear drums, too. The 5 speed manual is ancient, and awkwardly geared, but generally quite reliable.

The 15 redesign has a much nicer interior and exterior IMO.

Sometimes, if you just don't like a vehicle, you can convince yourself there are many problems with it.

Speaking of poorly rated, inexpensive new cars....I actually like the Mitsubishi Mirage. It can be had for less than any Focus, and will likely last just as long if you don't mind an older style floaty ride (more comfortable anyway), and the tiny car styling. It get's fantastic mileage and comes in either CVT or stick.

That would be my choice in inexpensive cars right now.
