String Trimmer Recommendations, Please!

I believe you can find good equipment with any of the major brands ; Husqvarna, red max, stihl, echo, shindaiwa and so forth.

I have owned a Husqvarna 323L string trimmer for 7 years and only changed the sparkplug once and adjusted the carb once. I run the stilhl synthetic oil and add stabil to the fuel. It cranks every time on the first or second pull. I like it better than the stihl. I operated a Shindaiwa for 60 hours per week on a road crew back in school and it was the best I ever operated. The shindaiwa had to have 2 shoulder straps it was so big.

I have a Husqvarna 450 chain saw, a 48' sears-husqvarna made riding lawn mower, and a 61" husqvarna zero turn mower. I am not loyal to Husqvarna. When I compare performance to price, I find Husqvarna to be a winner in the size equipment I purchased.

You can buy cheap equipment every year or buy good equipment every 10-15 years. I have found for me it is cheaper to buy good equipment.

I'll try the local Stihl dealer to see what they have. Otherwise it's off to the Home Despot for an Echo.

Good idea. I own stihl and echo products, and love everything I own. However you said there was a stihl dealer down the road, and should you need parts, or service, there ya go. Someone at that dealership MUST be a stihl gold level certified tech, and I recommend requesting the he be the one to service your product if it's ever needed.

I have an Echo trimmer, Stihl Chainsaw and Stihl blower, all working great for many years. If the local Stihl dealer is a good full service shop, I would rather buy from them than any big box store.

just got a stihl fs90r 4mix and it is a beast! came from a stihl fs45 and it was a great trimmer just killed my back cause it was so short. anyhow id say get a stihl if u want something reliable.local dealer sells stihl, husky, jonsered, and redmax and recomends stihl over any of them and thats what he uses personally and that speaks loudly for me. all we own is stihl equiptment and have never had any problems with any of it!

I have a 12V Black and Decker rechargeable trimmer that I bought 6 years ago, maybe more. Works great for my yard and I don't have to fuss around with gas and oil mixes anymore. Consumer Reports did a review of trimmers this month btw.

Good point about getting the right size trimmer for the job. I had a corded electric for many years that worked perfect for a suburban lawn. With an acre, and light to moderate brush, a medium size gas is the only way. Echo SRM-2100 will spin .095 and do ok with .105 string. A good size for my use. It is no match for a meadow of tall grass and weeds where a 5+hp. big wheeled beast works best.

I love my Echo, it's now 10 years old and running great. However, I'd be lying if I said that it had torque. Really, the small displacement 21.2cc engine is a bit down on low end torque. Makes plenty of power, but starting torque is less than my 12 year old John Deere (really just a 2 ring ryobi) unit (also a homeless depot purchase).

If I were to do it again, I'd purchase the 25cc Echo or Stihl or Shindawa.

The Echo 2100 is a light weight trimmer. For much brush cutting something larger would be better. Not just anything with more CC's though; it cuts stronger than a Homelite 30cc curved shaft I tried... Good cutting requires high tip speed.
