I changed the oil in my wife's Sequioa last weekend and had only had 2.5 qts of Mobil1 10W30 in the garage, so I went out and got 4 more quarts. When refilling, I drop a funnel in the fill hole, and pour two quarts at a time. I had one of the old qts in one hand, and a newly qt in the other; pouring them together, I noticed that they were different colors. The "old" oil was darker, and it was only in the garage for a few months, six months at most.

I looked at both bottles and the labels were identical. Anyone have any idea why there was a difference in color?

Maybe a formulation change........we need some new voa's.

I noticed this earlier on Mobil's site; a VOA would be nice to see just what changed:

Q. I've noticed that Mobil 1 has a lighter shade than usual. What is the reason for this change? Will it affect Mobil 1 performance?
A. In the summer of 2004, we improved one of Mobil 1's additives, which resulted in a slight color change. Rest assured that this change in color will have no effect on Mobil 1's outstanding performance. All versions of a specific Mobil 1 product - prior to and following the color change - can be mixed without any effect on product quality or performance.

Hmmm, interesting. Where did you find that question, I didn't see it on the website? What additives are they refering too I wonder? Can someone else send off a VOA of some recent Mobil 1? I'm sending off a sample of GC Monday. BTW, how much is it for a VOA with TBN?

It seems like Mobil changes their formulas quite often. I'm kinda thinking this would be a very expensive operation.

I'm going to assume change was for the API SM & GF-4 ratings.

Buster, are you sending a VOA of GC? Is it the new American GC, or the German GC?

Based on Mobil Drive Clean info from Carpy, organic moly is the anti-wear additive that generated the darker colored oil.

Mobil DC was on the shelves this past summer with both color variations, based on the blender/packager that filled the bottles.

We also had a post recently about Pennzoil changing from dark to light, so the darker tinted oil may become history.

Found it. Sorry about that. I'd like to see what changes they made. VOA anyone?
