Strange event at Home Depot yesterday

Well yesterday evening I went to HD to get some charcoal and hickory chunks for my grill/smoker. As I was checking out in the self checkout area there were two guys there. The first one closet to the door leaves. I go up to it. The machine is spitting out $5 bills. That guy is steady walking away. I was a bit surprised. I get the money which I guessed was about $40 worth of $5 bills. I had to run out to him to catch up to him. I gave him his money. Bless his heart he did not even realize that he had asked for money back from that machine. He tells me it was $50. He also tells me, "it's been one of those days". To which I told him, " I sure do understand that." He was very glad to get his money and shook my hand. I'm glad that I was there to help that guy get his money to him. I have days where I would lose my head if it want attached to my body. So I sure understand what it is to just totally forget something important.


Well I found that Home Depot has my favorite charcoal made by Kingsford. They have the competition briquettes which I really like a lot. A) those briquettes get fast very very fast.... In 5 minutes they are ready to cook on as they burn with a good blue flame that shows they are hot. B) you can add those Competition briquettes to a already lit charcoal fire and they catch so fast that you have little temperature drop. Which is great when cooking. And I was happy to find good sized hickory chunks as well. Harris teeter stopped carrying them which irritates me a lot. I use one chunk per hour when smoking a spiral ham or rack of beef ribs. Price wise the charcoal was the exact same price as Walmart. Not too shabby I must say.

And I managed to stop myself from picking up the Formula Shell for $9.88 5 qt container. That was impressive as well

I did that once - someone left money in the machine and walked away.

Once I found $12.xx in change and nobody in sight. So that was mine.

So.....I was a bit buzzed from night out and took money from ATM without counting. Headed to bars with friends and was amazed I had a bunch more money but attributed to different clothes/found and spent on friends.

Two weeks latter I get notice from bank they loaded incorrect bills into machine as it was odd you could do down to either $5 or $10 back in 1992. They wanted some money back but my pre lawyer friend wrote up a letter asking for proof of exact amount and they never asked. I know I got more money after the fact but no idea to this day.

Apparently the machine was raided as (dishonest) people figured this out and were pulling a certain amount out and getting double.

OP - it's good to know there are still honest people out there.

I would rather use the self-checkouts when there available,
but I learned they don't always give the exact change, so I ALWAYS count it.

Once I had the shelf-checkout give me $5.00 too much.
I showed the employee and he said he would take it (older man who I trusted).
I gave him the $5, but really felt I WON it (closet I ever got to a slot-machine).

The competition briquettes are great for short cooks, I agree. If you smoke food and need low and slow well maintained heat, I was really impressed with the Weber charcoal. Doing snake method in a weber 22 inch charcoal bbq, was able to maintain 250F for 14 hours. They are bigger briquettes than Kingsford.

Last week I was at a store and the guy in front of me left his wallet behind on the little shelf next to the cc machine. It looked very much like the one I have. So I looked at it and thought how did my wallet get there like that. Then I felt in my pocket and noticed my wallet was still there. So ran after him to return it. He looked relieved and was only a few steps outside of the doors. I know how I would have felt with a missing wallet so happy to give to him.

A few years ago found a wallet in one of the stalls at a gas station. Turned it over to one of the older employees that works there who I've talked to in the past.

Way back in the 80's when I used to regularly cash my paycheck at the local grocery store I was given $60 too much (check was $117.77 and the clerk gave me $177.77). I didn't notice it at first (I was 18 and was happy that I had gas and goof-off money for the weekend) but when I actually figured out what happened I went back to the store the next day and the manager said don't worry about it. I was worried that the service desk clerk who gave me too much money would get into trouble. Still the manager said no worries and take a hike. So, a bonus for me I guess...

I was at the local John Deere/Stihl dealer one day and "bought" a gallon of Stihl bar oil and a couple other items / paid for some service. At least I thought I did at the time.

Got ready for bed that night and it hit me, I never paid for the bar oil. I got into a conversation with two guys at the parts counter/register and ended up just picking up the gallon jug with my other stuff and walking out.

I went back about 10 days later and told them what happened. They looked at me like I was crazy....to come back and want to pay for the oil. They go to looking at my account, sure enough, there wasn't a gallon of oil on the last ticket.

I paid for it then, after they insisted that it was ok. But I paid for it.

Ever since then, they all bend over backwards when I go in to help me or just talk.
