Strange Corvette question

This must be "15W-40 week" for coffee.

The simple answer is heat, heat, and more heat. Look at the front of and under the hood of a late model Vette. That's the reason for the GM4718M spec and Mobil stepped up to the plate and met the challenge. Now others do, but Mobil was there first.

If I had one the last thing I would do is run conventional oil or a HDEO 15w40 in one of them. But I cannot afford a Vette, so I just drive two lowly Honda Elements and a Jeep Wrangler, and I still use synthetics in them.

Corvettes have historically been notorious for being unable to shed heat. I can only wonder how this design is affecting other materials under the hood, especially the seals and gaskets.

The battery in my Vette is almost 3 years old now and still going strong (started up perfectly even on 0F mornings this past winter) and the alternator is still original after 10 years and almost 95k.

I have a casual friend that has a very old Corvette. It is called a Stingray and ha a 427 CI engine. He said it is NEAR STOCK except an intake with 2 4 bbl carbs, a set of headers, an an oil pan taht is cast aluminum with cooling fins and holds 6 quarts, an after market clutch of some kind, and a 2.73 axle ratio. He uses Mobil 1 or Amsoil 20W-50 synthetic motorcycle oil.

My youngest nephew has a 2008 Corvette that he has had for about a month now. I do not know much about Corvettes but his had a sticker of $76,000.00 and change. He is going to use Mobil 1 0W-40 rather than Mobil 1 5w30 with a 2400 mile OCI as advised by the dealer.

The earlier LT1 'Vette's had a weaker alternator that was more prone to failure than the later LT1-on 'Vette's. I haven't read many things about overheating.

2400 mile OCI's on Mobil 1 0W-40....well, I guess if you have $76k to spend on a Vette, what's a bit extra for oil? I'm suprised the dealer is rec. 0W-40, GM usually says 'no' to ANYTHING over a 30wt. in ANY engine...but I guess the dealer knows better than the engineers!!!

Corvettes sold in Germany call for Mobil 1 0w40, even though they are built basically the same as US Corvettes.

I figured it was because 0w40 would be easier to find in Germany than any Xw30, since nearly everything they build takes 5w40 or 0w40.

I'm making an educated guess that he has a Z06 (for that sticker), as I don't think one could option out any other currently available version to reach that price.
IF he drives that monster any harder than a blue haired granny in her Avalon/Camry, there are MANY better oils he could be using (despite the dry sump system and external oil cooler it has)!!
I'm not even sure the Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the GM U.S. spec anyway (anyone know for sure, I can't find the list?), so might as well use something better.

I've seen as much as 33 mpg on the highway in my '00 Z28 (in the right conditions & operating parameters of course

I've ahd a Vette for a couple years now and am active in our local Corvette Club. I can say I have never heard of complaints re: battery failure, alternator, or cooling system in either the C5 or C6.

I agree, as I just checked on the Jeff Hardy site to see what a fully optioned automatic convertible would be, with the 4LT package, chrome wheels, magnetic selective ride control, dual mode exhaust, Navigation, extra cost color (Crystal Red) and performance axle, and it stickers out at $73,800.
