Strange Amsoil story, need help

A truly neutral party would look at the situation and say that it is more likely that a lab that sees hundreds if not thousands of samples a day made the mistake (or is lying) rather than the person who only has one 5 gallon pail of fluid in his garage.

I appreciate your passion on behalf of your company Pablo, and I realize the Amsoil haters may have got you down, but kindly refrain from basically calling me a liar. You didn't? That's how I am interpreting this line.

Bottom line here is that there are no other reported cases of this problem.

Back on January 19 of this year I ordered a 5 gallon pail of Amsoil's ISO-15 hydraulic oil. It shipped from the Lancaster, PA warehouse, and arrived in two days to my home in Vermont. Since I had the UPS tracking number, I knew exactly which day it was going to be delivered. Early in that day, I moved the tractor that I planned to install the fluid in into my insulated, heated garage in order to warm it up and drain the old fluid (the old fluid was also Amsoil ISO-15 hydraulic oil I installed 7 years before.

Could you give us a more exact timeline just out of curiosity?

So when did you actually receive the oil?

When did you install it?

When did you notify Amsoil of the suspected problem?

How long have you been in communications with Amsoil over this matter?

The only other possibility I can think of is mislabelling, but these kinds of containers are usually filled and labeled on machines in a serial fashion. Generally, you blend a product in a large tank, sample in the lab for QC, and then fill a batch of containers with the specific product.

Dude - I am NOT calling you a liar. I have little idea what actually happened. I have offered to help you!

I sell AWF05-EA out of all the warehouses. There have been no reported cases....

If I was going to speculate further, I would say the weakest link is the warehouse, but I can hardly accuse them of switching labels, product,or ????

OR maybe the factory had one empty, but AWF labeled, pail near when they were filling PCL05's....so only one got filled. I just don't know.

I'm sorry this happened to you. If I were your dealer and even if you had the original pail with a tiny bit left, I would get you a replacement, even if it came out of my pocket, but I assure you I wouldn't need to pay.

Ok, now let's not let our emotions interfere with the topic at hand. I think you misinterpreted Pablo's comments.

People here are trying to help sort this out and I didn't take Pablo's comments as calling anyone a liar, so let's not use that word anymore.

In fact, even though Pablo is not your sponsor, he is making an effort to get the facts.

Actually a court of law or neutral person would look at the batch retain and it's analysis, the QC record of this batch and say "it meets requirements". I used to work for Inland Specialty Chemical, so this was pretty standard stuff.

Then the returned sample would be analyzed and compared. If it was found to be different, that would prove nothing instantly, just that it's not the same fluid.

Some here have accused Amsoil of lying. I can tell you Amsoil makes mistakes as we all do, but they have not succeeding in business for coming up on 40 years by scamming, lying or being deceitful.

I'm not sure what else I can do. Give me all the details offline. Order #, dates, etc and I will check it out.

Sorry Pablo, I get a little hot under the collar sometimes. Especially when trying to communicate through forums like these, it's just about impossible to tell what someone is trying to say sometimes.

I am most certainly NOT accusing Amsoil of lying. If anyone else is, they can leave their baseless accusations at home. There is no evidence of it, and no reason for it.

MolaKule wanted a more detailed story, so let me try to expand on it, see if that helps.

I ordered the oil on 1/19/2009. In addition to the AWF05, I ordered one ATHQT. My order number was 12064000 and my invoice number was 12300768. It was shipped by UPS (tracking number 1Z 181 409 03 5385 062 7) and arrived on 1/21/2009. I was here when it arrived, the UPS driver put the package in my garage for me. The oil was installed that very day, 1/21/2009. Like I said earlier, the oil poured like honey, and the hydraulics never worked. On monday, 1/26/2009 I called Amsoil customer service and talked to Kurt. He said sample the oil. I told him I still had a few ounces left in the 5 gallon pail and could sample that, he said it didn't matter. So on that same day, 1/26/2009, I ordered a sample kit from Amsoil, order number 799311. I never got a tracking number, but the kit arrived thursday 1/29/2009 or friday 1/30/2009. I took a sample from the sump of the tractor. Sent it in immediately. The lab received it 2/2/2009. The lab called me within a day or two of receiving it since I put a note in the mailer for them to call me(I have a phone record in my cell phone of a call on 3/3/2009 from the 303 area code). Over a span of about a day, I talked to three people, two of whom had the same name because there was some confusion one time when I asked for someone by his first name only, I got a different person by the same first name. Over a period of two or three days I talked to them trying to explain what I needed, and they talked amongst themselves, and it was decided to do a pour point. They seemed a little confused the whole time, and never really strongly recommended any test. I spoke with a fourth person (female) to pay the additional money by credit card for the more expensive test. They completed the testing on 2/10/2009 and it was posted on their website (eoilreports.com) Within a day or to of that, I called Amsoil customer service again, asked for Kurt, he was out, and Chris offered to help me. I explained what had happened so far, he wasn't concerned with the difference in pour point between my sample and the advertised pour point of what I ordered. He then sent me another sample kit, this time from "their lab," not an outside lab. (sample jar came in a white plastic mailer and went to a different address) I had just enough oil left in the 5 gallon pail to fill the sample jar, I sent in the sample the very day I received it. I seem to recall it being a thursday or friday, 2/12/2009 or 2/13/2009. I don't remember how long after I sent it in, but it was a number of days (2/17/2009?) before I heard back. I have many caller ID logs for calls to and from 715-392-XXXX and 715-395-XXXX on many dates in February, including 2/9, 2/12, 2/13, and 2/17. They didn't inform me of the fact that the oil was in fact an ISO-150 oil until mid March, I believe it was 3/12/2009 or 3/13/2009 (based on my phone log). I even got a letter in the mail from Chris dated 2/17/2009 stating the same thing. We spoke again and he said they would do a couple more checks but when I asked about getting some replacement oil it sounded like they would be able to do that soon. I spoke to Chris again on 2/20/2009 and I gave him the batch number printed on my 5 gallon pail. Finally, on tuesday, 2/24/2009, Chris informs me that they have tested that batch, including doing an FTIR on my sample, and have discovered that the sample I sent them "is not even an Amsoil product." Chris said as a result he wouldn't be able to push through a warranty claim.

That's it. No fewer than two times they had the ability to have me send back the 5 gallon pail with a few ounces of the original, untainted oil left in it. But Chris didn't think it would matter because that oil would have still tested as not being an Amsoil product, and so rather than assuming it got screwed up while they were liable for it, the assumption is that somehow it got screwed up, whether honestly or dishonestly, while in my possession. If there is anything more I can explain, let me know.

I will make some contacts today and let you know what I find out.

I think the oddest thing now is the "is not even an Amsoil product." I was pretty tired and still had a ton of work last night and I was off in the weeds when I was thinking along the lines of the lube you received being another product in the fill pipes at the factory and yours being the first pail filled.

PS PM me you dealer #. Thanks.

Next question, what did you replace it with?

+1 only they'd hear me screaming from NY. I can't believe they charged to sample a product they shipped then said it wasn't theirs. WOW.

Basically their calling the OP a liar? He's a repeat customer too, not asking for anything other than replacing the bad product, not looking for damages. There has to be more to it.

Stuff happens all the time, I opened up a gallon of some high end paint a few weeks ago that was thinner than water. The company immediately replaced the product apologized and all was good. They also said I was the first person to complain. I have my doubts about that, no one ever wants to admit fault, but smart business would be to replace the product before the problem escalates to a board like this.

My feeling is Amsoil will make it right, especially now.

Thanks again Pablo for helping out a guy completely across the country from you. :) The batch number off the pail is 11276 098.

I think so too.

Let's use the wording, "alleged." Nothing has been confirmed or denied.

There is one error in the narrative I posted just a few posts above. The actual date on the letter from Chris is 3/17/2009, not 2/17/2009.

Dang, two other errors. Sorry, I typed that second long post last night at 3 in the morning. I talked to Chris on 3/20/2009 (not 2/20/2009) and gave him the batch number, and then on 3/24/2009 (not 2/24/2009) Chris informed me it wasn't an Amsoil product that I sent them.

What we don't know is if the samples got mixed up or not. I seriously doubt the OP would lie, and I'm not saying Amsoil would lie either. Bottom line here is the OP is SOL at this point.

Mixing up samples at the lab is something that can easily occur, and now the OP has no virgin product to test, only what is in the tractor. It could be said its now mixed with remnants of what didn't drain out of the tractor, so chemically it would be different than virgin product. That would make it real easy to say it is not an Amsoil product. IMO it's still bad business to make the OP pay for the testing of the product.

Reminds me of the OJ Simpson trial, and the possibility of tainted evidence.

True.

I think I would have stopped pouring the oil into the tractor if it didn't pour like the ISO-15; but then again, it was cold and one expects what the label says to be the actual product ordered.

I'm with you, I would have stopped, called the tech line and asked what was up. But then again having confidence in a product I might have done exactly what the OP did. Hopefully it will be resolved. w/o further issues.

Maybe with Pablo going to bat for you this will get resolved in your favor. If not, you could always call your CC company and initiate a chargeback, but hopefully it won't come to that.

That's what I'm hoping, and regardless of the outcome I'm very grateful to Pablo for even trying.

I have thought about what might have happened if I immediately stopped pouring the oil into my tractor, and called customer service. I think I would probably be in the same boat; they would have told me to sample the oil, and the oil would appear to not be an Amsoil product, and they would deny my claim.

Anyway, I sure have my fingers crossed waiting to see what Pablo is able to dig up.
