I went to get the Mobil Super special at Autozone after cleaning out O'Reillys of 5w20. I was going to get two filters to fit my girlfriend's RAV4 cartridge, but they were 10 bucks(!!) and the sale was only good with filters up to $4.50. So I got 2 filters for my Kia instead.

STP2808. Looks like a Champ labs filter, 5 holes with o-ring gasket. Non-ecore type, regular center tube. Any good? Roughly equivalent to SuperTech?

Yes and Yes.

From what I could tell without tearing one apart, the STP's have a little more media than the equivalent SuperTech.

But yes, Champ labs and if it's a non-ecore should be a fine filter.

If you didn't cut them open and measure the pleats, how could you possibly tell?

They were both e-cores, with the naked eye I could see more pleats in the STP than I could see in the equivalent SuperTech...but like I said I didn't take them apart. But more pleats on a identical size filter from the same manufacturer would suggest to me more media.

Paper end caps (with bad glue job) + ecore + combo valve = no thanks.

Yeah... I only did it to get the oil cheap, I ended up getting a FL820S with the purchase for $14 total and cut the STP filter open for you guys.

Yeah, I saw that plan ... good one.

Good job, Provi. Nice. Heck, Wix combo valve looks better than that P.O.C. lol...but perhaps it needs to be different in that design relative to e-core?

STP filters are pretty good filters. Even though it is a good filter, still change it every oil change, but yeah I use them and they do a pretty good job at filtering the oil.

OP, the S2808 has metal end caps and center tube. Much different construction than the one in Provi's video.

Here's what you bought. I have two on deck as well...

You can see media pleats inside of an ecore filter without cutting it open.

Yep, a lot has changed in 7+ years for the AZ STP OF brand. No longer any relationship to Champ Labs. Even the yt posted is not current for all information, as the ML is no longer Puro US made. Now all China coo and locally ML has limited applications on shelf.

One noteable recent change, now have a 7317 application in both the blue can and the XL, so 6607 downsizing unnecessary. Some say the XL the equivalent of the Premium Guard upper tier filter and the equivalent current Federated filter. Certainly looks like it.

personally, I would use a high flowing filter, stp (ecore), and fram extra guard is a good filter. the guys that are on here think that because of the frams/ecore construction, that it is bad. they have been doing filtering for years. I have no idea what people are putting in the oil that they have to use a high end filter to filter it out but I dont ever put anything in my oil so I really dont even need a filter. I would recommend anything cheap. Ecore, purolator, wix, and fram works, but so does many others and recommended dealer filters.

It's not what you put in the oil, it's what comes out of the engine oil (soot/carbon, sludge, dirt/silicon from the air, etc.) and keeping that out of the bearings. For older, carbureted engines a solid low-end filter is the best solution, changed regularly with a decent conventional or synthetic blend oil. For what AZ charges for the STP, I think that the similar Premium Guard, or even filters from the Rock Auto and eBay clearance rack are a better deal.
