The small hole at the front let over 21/2 quarts of oil out before I noticed it. I can only guess that a rock hit it.

You could be like me and go 500 miles between stops. That's plenty of time for 2.5 quarts (or more) to drip out under pressure.

If your filter is in a place to get hit like that, You need a filter with a thicker shell.

rshaw125..

In the top picture there is a dent in the dome end of the shell. There is a crack at the edge of the can.

You claim a rock did this.

First, even a thicker shell would still buckle and dent based on the size of the dent in your can.

The rock may not have immediately cause the hole. Any dent in a filter shell will "flex" under pressure. So a crack may occur at a later time.

The lower picture shows a second dent 3 flutes to the right of the dent with the crack. Now either you had 2 rocks hit this filter...or something else has transpired to cause these two dents. ( before some claims the first rock did the two dents..take a hammer to a filter and see if the shell dents in two places with one blow).

Everyone else can speculate as to why there are two dents..

The rock hitting the filter is just speculation. The hole is indeed a small crack. And as the filter was installed the leak was at the 6 o'clock position.Maybe the Purolator I installed to replace the STP is not any tougher but I hope it is. As for the other dent- it is not near as deep as the leaking one.Its just pushed in a little.

I've bit my tongue on this one long enough.
I'll give my first impression now that Filter guy has pointed out what I was thinking. First impression: This guy put on a damaged (dented) filter. The dome end has two dents in it. Yeah, I know, I'm a cynic and a SOB. Sorry.

NEVER put on a damaged (dented in any way) filter due to the metal fatigue phenomenon that Filter guy described.

This is the first time I have tried to post a pic. It may take a while. The hole is in the dome end. It looks like a small rock may have hit it.
The Purolator I replaced it with certainly seems sturdier in that area. Not scientific just by pressing it with my thumbs.

May I recomend that you not do any more filter "pressing" until after you have used the filter.

That is...unless you are checking a K&N or a M1 filter....in that case press all you want cause it won't budge unless you take a hammer to it.

I put the STP filter on my van at the end of August 2005.I noticed the leak a week ago.It did not -I repeat did not have any dents in it when it was installed.
The Purolator I just put on there did not have any dents in it either. Otherwise I would have taken it back to PepBoys and gotten a replacement.
When I referred to pressing on the filter with my thumb I was testing the resistance - it sprang back and did not leave a permanent impression.

Back on topic, I do not think it was hit by a rock. If it was you'd see some paint marks..

Maybe a smooth rock?

I think it was dented when you put it on.

No damage to the motor I hope?

Take care, Bill

He says it wasn't dented when he put it on. I think it was road debris of some sort. Maybe a slightly thicker can would have held, maybe not. These probabilities are pretty low so I have no desire to find the filter with the thickest can for on the road applications. Like alreadygone said, "IT happens."

Yeah, like the duck says, it happens. I have always said the longer you are on the job, the more time you spend preventing things unlikely to have even happened the first time. I still have the sales slip for the ST I bought the other day. I will be putting the filter on my truck, not taking it back.

Note, the heavier the canister, the harder to cut open.

OK, I'm game. Just what engine was this "junk" STP filter placed?

Sigh. Ask yourself, what does the evidence presented suggest? To get dented like that with road debris..... no scraps?, no chips?. C'mon.

I guess it depends on the application. Off roading? Poor filter placement (i.e. hanging too low)? Front of the engine block or the back?

Yes, "it" does. Is this one of those cases? Or is there another "agenda" of some sort? I don't really know or care. Just making a judgement on the evidence presented. Maybe it was a terrorist plot to damage his engine.

In my days...lol

I have seen damaged filters due to road debris. Over the road truckers get this type of damage. Their filters are much bigger and much thicker than automotive ones are. It still happens to them. In their case, they chalk it up to bad luck and put a new filter on. Some truckers even carry spare filters with them.

Which is why I mentioned earlier a "thicker" filter may or may not have solved the problem. My guess is from the picture, not. That's a pretty deep dent.
