STP and Microgard Filters

Here are the filters that I acquired during the Mobil Super special that was recently running at AutoZone and O'Reilly's. I am ordering a filter cutter today and will cut open one of the Microgard and one of the STP filters and post the photos of them for all to see.

Hopefully, the photos will help those who are on the fence decide if they will use them or not. As for me, I will try to exchange all of them for FL-820s filters...

I've thrown an STP oil filter on my 98 Camry V6 a few days ago after using M1 for the longest time.

I'm currently doing a mini flush / cleanup interval with Pennzoil Conventional and a quart of Quaker State Conventional (freakin one gallon jugs :grin2) so i figured the STP should be fine for 3k or so.

LOL - I have:
  • 122 quarts of Super in 5W-20 (for all 3 vehicles)
  • 10 quarts of Super in 10W-40 (to try in my Brute Force)
  • 20 quarts of Rotella T6 in 5W-40 (currently in the Brute Force)
  • 15 quarts of PU in 5W-20 (FX4)
  • 10 quarts of Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 5W-20 (Azera and Elantra)
So 177 quarts total. The funny thing is that I stopped using XOM products a long time ago, but it was crazy not to take advantage of this latest deal. I just ordered the cutter and it ships from Atlanta, so I may have it this weekend and photos will follow for the STP and Microgards.
 
I really don't think it's worth the effort to exchange all the filters. They will be just fine for reasonable (under 10k) intervals.

I use fram-made 'Motomaster' filters on my 2003 Tribute in the same size as above - I'd use all those filters in a heartbeat!
 
I got 2 of the oreilly deals and 2 of the autozone deals. (should have bought more.) I'm going to return the Microgards and get Motorcraft filters. I'm on the fence about using the STPs (4962 or close) The STPs do look better than the microgards though. I see excessive glue on the microgards. I'm subscribing to this thread as well.

Not that this is scientific by any stretch, but the weight difference between an MC and either of these two is fairly significant. One of the OR guys said "these are made by Fram and just relabeled for us, so you know they are good".

I had to bite my tongue to keep a straight face--not that I have anything against Fram, I just think MCs are vastly superior and they are only $0.40 more at OR.
 
yup, if nothing else, the motorcraft filters are built way better and have a silicone drain-back valve - I'd use them on my Toyota if they had one that was a direct OEM fit for sure.

My FX4 is still under warranty and for $0.40 I will not jeopardize that. However, I am not sure if the STP or MG has a silicone or nitrile ADBV (I do not have one in front of me)--I am guessing nitrile.

Either way, I will not be using them and if I am not able to exchange them...ebay here they come!
 
I have about 10 microgards to exchange.

I am putting one on my car for a 500 mile OCI (UIM/LIM gasket change). Felt bad "wasting" a nicer filter on it so the microgard is perfect, in this case.

Shelf life is about 5 years. Will you use it all before expiration?
 
What you'll find in the STP is a standard ecore, like a Super Tech.

And the MicroGard will look similar to the interior of a Fram orange can.

Shouldn't be anything surprising.

The marketing dept says 5 years shelf life.
I tested one of our old test samples before I threw it out that was 22 years old.
Results came back EXACTLY the same as when it was new.

So no,it does not have a shelf life.
But we do want you to buy new oil to keep us in business!

The FX4 sees an OC about every 60 days with a 7.5K OCI and the Azera/Elantra every 4-6 months with a 5K OCI. The question would be whether or not I can go 7.5K on Super in the FX4, if I can, I will use all of it within 3 years, if not even sooner.

PS..I am not sure that I subscribe to a 5 year expiration date though...

Wow! 45k a year, no wonder...Have you considered the drums/pails? Both XOM and Pennzoil give that as the shelf life, but they don't say why.

LOL - I had hoped it would slow down, but I guess not; we drive too much. Here are my last 6 used oil analysis with PU (I hope the Super does close to this well):
