Stocking Up On Motor Oil

You start one. I am already on everyone’s poop list.
Off topic, but Friday we were going over the Ravenel and got some great lightning video.

Prior to the Iran war... I bought and bought a bunch.... I looked for smoking deals on Amazon and Walmart.... and I scored. I now have, probably three years at the least.... and probably have 6-8 years of 15w40 for all my littler engines..... and my Diesels..
I did the same thing. I seen the oil problem coming. I maintain three cars. I got three years worth of oil changes for each car. Whenever there was a rollback or somewhere had it on sale I always grabbed a few jugs and just as many filters.

I just got back from Walmart this morning and noticed the price increases had finally hit my area. I’m glad I got the oil months ago. It has went up quite a bit.

If someone is just stocking up now, take it easy. It's too late to build a two year stash, *IMO*. Once the situation in the Mideast resolves (one way or the other), lots of new supply is going to hit the market and the Asian basestock refineries are going to move back to producing more stock (jet fuel and diesel are more profitable right now).

That went up to what we were happy paying for Valvoline Restore and Protect and some others.

I would agree with the caveat if there is something you just must have - like Restore and Protect or ESP - then you should get some. Who knows what is available at what price going forward.

If your like me and will run whatever, we will always have something irrelevant of what the middle east plants do.

like Restore and Protect or ESP
yes, definitely Valvoline Restore and Protect. this should be easy for anyone to check, if they really care. IIRC, Aramco owns Valvoline. Aramco also owns a Korean subsidiary that makes lots of basestock (Oilbank, IIRC?). Pretty safe assumption that some part of Valvoline Restore and Protect comes from that complex in Korea, formerly using Mideast crude (now more Canadian).

IIRC, Mobil's refineries are more in the US/western hemisphere using western hemisphere crude. Again, I forgot the specifics and I'm not going to bother looking it up as I don't care that much.

If you just need SQ oil, take it easy. If you have to have something specific like Valvoline Restore and Protect or ESP or whatever, then it's different.

Saw the increase in motor oil prices and picked up two 20 quart boxes of valvoline restore and protect 0w-20 for $117. Thought everyone should know since Walmart currently has it at the same price before the increase except for the 5 quart jug. Wondering if anyone else stocked up too?

I'm stocking up on the Castrol 5w30 at 23,97 for 5 quarts. Walmart prices jumped to the higher prices at Autozone and Oreilly places. It's crazy. Walmart Super Tech looks like it stayed the same. I've never had problem with their oil

As some others have said, I think it depends on how many cars you maintain, how many miles they are driven, how often you change the oil, and how particular you are about the oil you use. Oh...and how much you pinch your (disappearing) pennies

Is there a thread to follow for “smoking deals”? I would love to get a notification when someone pipes up that they found VRP for under $5/qt.

I did my stocking up back in May when everything was at the 'regular' prices at Walmart. Then it didn't look like a shift was happening until this past week, and I am glad that I did. I wish I had the funds to buy that 12 quart box of M1 0W-40 from Walmart that was $60, as it has now risen to $70. I took advantage of the sale on Idemitsu ATF at Auto Zone at that time as well, wondering what all of this is going to do to ATF prices. Got enough ATF now for the next few years.

I actually just sold the remaining M1 15w50 stock. I hadn't kept up with prices and had it listed accordingly but Walmart has changed. They now list 1 jug for $31.97 which is outrageous but online you get get the multipacks where they are only $24.97 each. I sold mine for $20 each and gave one free because they took all of it, had I checked the current price I wouldn't have done that. I had it listed for a few months and just now sold it. I still came out well ahead though and purchased it during those special deals from a few yrs ago if anyone remembers.

I checked others on there, SOPUS is the worst offender. Pennzoil Platinum is $35.97 and Quaker State Full Synthetic is $29.97. Castrol is currently on "rollback" but was at least priced normally, even Valvoline is higher.
