Stocking up on Milsurp ammo?

Anyone else here decided to stock up on ammo for their old rifles? I was too poor/short sighted to get it while it was cheap.. I have a couple 8mm's, and 7.62x54's and have been watching the prices go up and up the past couple years.. Recently I've been having a hard time finding 8mm at all, so I went on cheaper than dirt and bought a 900rnd case of 8mm and a 440 rnd tin of 7.62x54.. Just curious what everyone else was doing to deal with the dwindling supply.. Also they have russian .223 for $3.59 per box of 20. You can't even buy bullets to reload for that price.

I need some 7.62x54 ammo. I see it around for 89.00 for 440 rounds, is that a good price? My son and i just got a couple of mosin nagants, and want a bit of ammo for them.

Yes the going price for that is around $90. And from my experience it all shoots fine. Four years ago the same 440rnds would have been $35, but that's the way it goes..

I'm in the market for a bunch of 7.62x39mm stuff if I can find it. Cheaper than dirt may be the way to go it seems.

I haven't purchased from Wideners, but I can speak for the great customer service from J&G Sales. $165 for 880 54R, and they have very reasonable shipping as the quantity goes up.

I currently sit on around 3k each of 54R, 7.62x39 and .223. I'll pick up more if the price continues to drop back to where it was three years ago.

7.62x39 is available at Academy on Westheimer & Voss/Hillcroft...I was paying around $4/20rounds, had to run to the garage to check my ammo can to be sure. Russian (Monarch) stuff, but should be fine.

Ammo can take up space quickly so I dont really "stock" ammo for guns that I would not use in a pinch. Yeah I have a couple boxes of British 303 and a couple of french 7.5 but I think I have more 38special and #1 Buck than anything else. Compared to most I doubt my supply is even a 10th of what most shooter have on hand but I think I could make 38 special last a while it the supply dried up. I think keeping what you have in proper storage condition is more important than overall quantity
