Still On The Road

The thing with registration data is if my car blows up a couple months into a one- or two-year registration, it still shows as "on the road' for a while longer.

The other thing is when they run those ads, whatever the cutoff year they use is, is where the very sharp statistical cliff begins, or they'd have picked an earlier year.

I live on the border of MD. DE. And PA. and I never see the old ones anymore. Do you???

You're in higher rust area. Not as bad as the rust belt but not a whole lot better either. Take ride out to the eastern shore one day. It's a whole other world for older cars. You might see a 60's or 70's car going down the road every hour or two. I don't think I see those more than once a month around here, if that much.

There are quite a few old TDI Jettas in this area. I'm guessing the reason is great fuel economy, so they get repaired and stay on the road (?). Old Honda's too. Few to none old FWD Fords, GMs, or Chryslers.

I got to think hard when I saw a car that was common back then, on the road today. Don't think I've seen a Celebrity or Citation in a few years. Did see a K car and a Chevette last year.

I've seen a few older Centurys and Cutlasses around, surprises me, my Grampa's 89 Celebrity was pretty rusted out when he got rid of it over 10 years ago

Well that's because nobody actually drives them they just wax them maybe change the fluids in them once a year and just leave them sit in the garage until the next guy buys it at a higher price to do the same thing.

I just saw a Reliant coupe in Richmond, VA last week and I could hardly believe it. It was black and in absolutely showroom condition parked at the CVS I was getting my Covid shot. I really should've taken a picture.

Subaru has never been at Toyota levels of reliability, IMO. But, a lot of Subaru owners will just toss whatever money they need to toss at their car to keep it going. Even if they do last a good amount of time compared to the average, I think the owners willing to dump money into them after 150K inflates their reputation a bit. They are great cars regardless of any mechanical problems they have been plagued with. It easy to get attached to them and want to keep them going like an old dog.

Being the desert, Subarus aren't all that popular here like they are up North, so I don't see a whole lot of them.

I also find it hard to believe a high percentage of the older ones still being on the road. Usually old beaters meet their fate when they get blown head gaskets, and with that being so common I'd think alot would have seen the crusher by now.

For some reason, people say Vermont loves Subarus. While I’ve seen more here than living in other states, not many are old. Even with several Subaru-specific repair shops near me, all the cars there for service are newer.

Just today, for the first time in my life, I saw a silver Brat with a black cap on the back.

There’s a local who has a green Brat that I see around town occasionally.

I saw a GL wagon a few weeks ago. Not sure that’s the proper name; it’s a wedge-shaped vehicle that was common in the late 80s. My friend’s parents had one and I remember all it said on the back was Subaru GL 4x4.

I am dying right now, my mom's best friend had the exact one on the bottom. She was 10 years older than me. My mom is 20 years older than me. I remember her teaching me to drive on a Ford Escort wagon, manual. Good memories.

Remember when several companies used commercials to boast how many of their old vehicles are still on the road?

I have been doing other things to notice the last decade but a Subaru commercial came up yesterday and they are still saying that. It is like 90 some percent.

My brother and I had some very early 80's ones and we both got lost in the early 90's...

Not a bash but honestly I haven't seen old Subarus around for ages.

Don't see old Subaru vehicles here, they are almost all under 10 years old. Honestly don't see Subaru frequently at all. They are not a big seller in this area.

If i had the money I'd love to have a car collection of oddball vehicles nobody ever sees. On Jalopnik there was a 1994 Chrysler/Dodge Intrepid with 984 miles, and garage kept by a little old lady. Alot of the heavy duty trucks. Especially diesel were auctioned and sent to African countries
