Still On The Road

Remember when several companies used commercials to boast how many of their old vehicles are still on the road?

I have been doing other things to notice the last decade but a Subaru commercial came up yesterday and they are still saying that. It is like 90 some percent.

My brother and I had some very early 80's ones and we both got lost in the early 90's...

Not a bash but honestly I haven't seen old Subarus around for ages.
I live on the border of MD. DE. And PA. and I never see the old ones anymore. Do you???

You are right Jim. I can’t think of the last old Subaru I seen except the brat we have at school but it hasn’t run in years. I see mostly old Ford, Toyota, Mazda and Honda these days. Some square body Chevrolet here and there too.

Here I no longer see old Chevy Trucks. No Dodge at all. Wonder if cash for clunkers took all of this stuff away. Weirdly I see all kinds of these Fords and older but very few of the next generation after these.
I took this Ford pic now. Was 4 like it in the parking lot.

See a lot of those around too. Dodge do see occasionally but not often the oldest Dodge you see is normally the 90s stuff. I would not doubt if Cash For Clunkers took most of them I know my neighbor got rid of his old Chevy van in cash for clunkers.

Yeah pretty much the same here. I see a lot of newer ones. Occasionally I’ll see an old Outback or Legacy but that’s about it.

In my part of PA rust normally got the late 90's, early 2000's ones. They'd rust out and no longer pass inspection. They use a ton of salt around here being near several mountain roads. I still see them, but typically they're tagged in Maryland which only does an inspection to get tags. In my area I see a lot more late 90's S10/Blazers running around than anything. Complete with no mufflers obviously.

The most surprising older vehicle I still seen on the road was about a year ago I seen a late 90s Plymouth Voyager, I was surprised to see one of those older Voyager\Caravans still on the road.

I just gave away my dads 2000 blazer. Was a low mileage garage queen that looked brand new. Underneath totally rusted out and he wouldn't drive it in the rain...

Those old Blazers were turds from day one. They handled like a yacht in rough water..

The thing about old Subarus is that the older 2.5's seem to have head gasket issues with miles which will mechanically total one unless you repair it yourself.

Here in central VA the oldest Subarus I see on a regular basis are ~2006, whenever the Outback/Legacy/Impreza were facelifted in the early 2000s. They're regularly the newest car I see anywhere. Between head gasket issues, direct injection/carbon deposit problems, junk CVTs, etc. I can't imagine recommending one to a family member.

I was thinking the same. If everybody was an auto mechanic most cars would live a long life.
Leasing gets bashed big time but they fail to realize your car isn't worth much after it is paid off and with todays electronics they usually are doomed to an early death anyhow.

I remember reading how most of these cars are sold in New England and Mountain West (from Colorado- states west, and north) regions. Most folks back east/midwest don't realize they use salt/brine out west, too. The cars are popular here in Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe region.
I'd be interested to know how exactly they get all that registration data.
