Let's be clear: If Chrysler were to offer up a mid-sized car, with the name "Matador" on it, and I suppose with this engine, I will be first in line. I would be so pumped to tell folks I am cruising a '27 Matador.

I currently drive a detuned GME4T or Hurricane 4 EVO in detuned form (so it doesn't shatter the Hyundai sourced 8 speed)
Thing sounds like a box of parts in a cement mixer - and the ecu tuning and cal are not a pleasant experience. Very inconsistent day to day - even star to start! Maybe it will get better when it gets more miles on it. It has a 5W30 oil cap.
The Mazda-Ford 2 liter ecobost in my previous Maverick was a much more refined and powerful engine.

You're on a forum about motor oil and related tech. Of course you and others here are more focused on reliability. The biggest knock against the downsized Stellantis powertrains from the average consumer has been the loss of the v8 burble. The average consumer can barely change their oil on time. They aren't thinking about the long-term reliability of the powertrain because they don't plan to keep it that long. Most consumers see a peak power number and mpg, that's it.
I was impressed with FCA/Stellantis all attitude gimbal dyno durability testing on the previous hurricane 3.0 liter Turbo. Helps in oil pan/sump design in severe off road usage.
Yep. I was interested in a newer rogue to replace my 2018 with the indestructible 2.5. Then I joined a forum and realized that their 1.5L turbo charged sewing machine engines were locking up and self destructing.
Most people also aren’t pushing there engines to the limit everyday. I’m sure this engine will be fine for the regular duty cycle of the typical Grand Cherokee while delivering better fuel economy and power delivery. Would I want to run this engine at max power all day? Absolutely not, I would want something bigger to make the required amount of power.

But driving it is a hoot. I rented one and it had some giddyap. Just need an extended warranty.
I agree. I just had a platinum rogue 2025 in Newark for 2 weeks. Very deep growl for being a 4 banger and a lot more pep than the 2.5. Just sounded like a can of marbles at idle and prone to spun bearings.
Different engine. The Hurricane4 as discussed in this thread is a new engine and not the same as the GME4T/Hurricane EVO family.
The 1.5 is a three cylinder, not a “4 banger”.
Gonna be a hard pass from me. Just can't get past a 4 banger moving 5000Lbs+.

The 2.0L Ecoboost in that Maverick has nothing to do with the previous Mazda-designed 2.0L. (Ford has long since tinkered with/redesigned/butchered it.)
One thing i realllly like about the smaller displacement turbos is they weigh less than a big NA, and it pays spades in weight distribution and handling. RWD with good weight distribution, even in a truck or suv, is a wonderful thing.
The Italians have always been great at shoes, which translates into the interiors we’ve seen on the stellantis influence - look at a RAM - they are works of art compared to the others - and they aren’t afraid to push hard for power. Man, I remember a nearby lancia growing up - the gauges never worked but it was all snarl and go! I’ll bet when they get a good design out there it will be fun to drive for sure, but also agree that there are risks. I wouldn’t expect the turbo itself to have trouble - seems like in the hurricane it was the cam, and cams can get weird when they get long due to harmonics. A 4 cylinder may be a safer design under this architecture simply due to 30% reduction in moving parts.

This would matter if the rest followed. A Grand Cherokee will still be north of 4000lbs with this thing, and they'll have to be hauled by it.

Miatas are precious and have to last. Don't doom them.
